    • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To flexibly cope with increase/decrease in a scale of switch by transmitting a congestion surveying cell from an incoming side channel unit to an outgoing side channel unit and returning the congestion surveying cell from the outgoing side channel unit to the incoming side channel unit that is a sender of the cell. SOLUTION: The ATM switch is provided with a channel unit 2 that accommodates an incoming channel 1, a channel unit 4 that accommodates an outgoing channel 5, and a unit switch 3 to set a transfer path of a cell. The channel unit 2 transmits an OAM cell being a congestion surveying cell to the channel unit 4, and the channel unit 4 returns the cell to the channel unit 2 that is a sender of the cell. The unit switch 3 discriminates the occurrence of congestion according to the number of cells stored in a buffer 50 and writes discriminated congestion indicating information to the OAM cell. Congestion of the transfer path of the OAM cell is detected by reading the congestion indicating information.

    • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To compensate the order of cells with less hardwares by reading the address information of the cells corresponding to time information from address buffers provided in output lines and reading the cells from a common memory corresponding to it. SOLUTION: The time information required for arrival is written in the cells arriving at input lines I1 -Im and time buffers TB1 -TBn for time sequentially holding the time information synchronized with absolute time are provided for the respective output lines O1 -On . Write control parts W1 -Wm extract the time information of the arriving cells and transfer it to the time buffers TB1 -TBn . A threshold setting part TH compares the time information of the cells simultaneously arriving at the input lines I1 -Im and sets the threshold of the time information. Read control parts R1 -Rn read the time information of the time buffers TB1 -TBn corresponding to the threshold., read the address information of the corresponding cells from the address buffers AB1 -ABn and read the cells from the common memory M corresponding to it.

    • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To simplify and compact mounting by separately and annularly arranging parts for processing electric signals and optical signals and placing the common control part of a power source part or the like at the center of annular arrangement further. SOLUTION: The three pieces of switch units U1-U3 are attained by constituting the ATM switch boards 1-1-1-8 of an electric signal level provided with optical signal input/output terminals 12 and 13 in a plate shape and vertically piling them up in 8 stages and they are connected and arranged through optical connection parts O1-O2. Also, a power supply current from a power source unit 7 at the lower part of the switch units U1-U3 to the respective boards 1-1-1-8 is supplied through a power source circuit 8 provided on the center of the annularly arranged switch units U1-U3. A connection optical fiber length is shortened by disposing the optical connection parts O1 and O2 on the boundary back surface of the switch units U1 and U2 and the boards 1-1-1-8 are electrically connected by a back board 10 provided with optic/electric and electric/optic transducers. In such a manner, the parts for handling the electric signals and optical signals are separated and an optical signal transmission line is shortened.

    • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To easily perform maintenance and transport even when a switch scale is enlarged by constituting a switch unit by parallelly arranging unit switch boards for which (m)×(n) unit switches provided with (m) input lines and (n) output lines are loaded on a board, connecting the plural switch units and constituting them into a rectangular parallelepiped. SOLUTION: The unit switch boards SW provided with the (m) input lines, the (n) output lines and a unit switch part which is an exchange connection means for distributing cells arriving at the input lines to a desired output line are formed into a quadrilateral planar shape. By piling up (m)×qn switch units constituted by parallelly arranging the (q) plate surfaces of the unit switch boards for (p) stages, mp×qn switches are constituted. Thus, the plural unit switch boards are constituted in less space not two-dimensionally but three- dimensionally, the maintenance and transport are facilitated and power supply, cooling and clock supply are also facilitated.
