A boundary face between the reference electrode 14 and the solid electrolyte 15 is allowed to come into contact with measured gas via the through hole 19 and the gas permeable reference electrode 14.

    • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a gas sensor having pump cells of high oxygen-pumping ability provided with electrodes of high catalytic ability for a gas to be measured, and capable of accurately measuring the concentration of the gas. SOLUTION: This gas sensor is provided with a first pump cell 6 which has first internal and external electrodes 10, 11 formed on internal and external surfaces of a first passage 2 respectively, and pumps oxygen out/in from the first passage 2 through an oxygen ion conductor, and a second pump cell 8 which has second internal and external electrodes 14, 15 formed on internal and external surfaces of a second passage 4 respectively, and in which current generated by the reaction of a gas to be measured in the second passage 4 corresponding to the concentration of the gas to be measured carries, between the electrodes 14 and 15 through the oxygen ion conductor. As at least a part of the internal electrode 13 contains a platinum group element and Ag, its catalytic ability is high, thereby the reaction of the gas to be measured on the second internal electrode 13 is accelerated and stabilized to improve the accuracy of measurement.

    • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a nitride concentration meter for detecting NOx concentration accurately through a simple circuit. SOLUTION: The NOx sensor comprises a first measuring chamber 20 conducting through a diffusion control layer to the side of gas being measured, and a second measuring chamber 26 conducting through diffusion limit layers 6d, 22d to the first measuring chamber 20. The quantity of oxygen flowing into the second measuring chamber 26 is controlled constant by controlling a first pump current IP1 such that the output from a Vs cell 6 is equal to a reference voltage VCO. The NOx concentration is detected from the detection signals VIP1, VIP2 of first and second pump currents IP1, IP2 by applying a constant voltage to a second pump cell 8 to decompose the NOx component in the second measuring chamber 26 and pumping oxygen. The electrode 6b on the first measuring chamber 20 side of the Vs cell 6 is formed on the circumferential fringe of the diffusion limit layer 6d or above the diffusion limit layer 6d. According to the arrangement, the quantity of oxygen flowing from the first measuring chamber 20 into the second measuring chamber 26 can be detected accurately and the NOx concentration can be detected from the VIP1, VIP2.
