    • PURPOSE:To obtain the device for diagnosing the cleaning efficiency of a catalyst which can exactly judge the deterioration of the catalyst by providing an air-fuel ratio sensor and issuing the information on the deterioration of the catalyst when the width of the change in the equiv. ratio with respect to the width of the change in the correction factor for feeding back of the air-fuel ratio exceeds a set value. CONSTITUTION:This device is constituted by providing the air-fuel ratio sensor 18 of a total area type on the outlet side of a scanning container for housing the ternary catalyst 9 and providing an electronic control unit ECU 1. A means (ECU 1) for calculating the correction factor for feeding back of the air-fuel ratio of this constitution takes the correction factor for feeding back of the air-fuel ratio for the purpose of feedback control therein and calculates the width of the change therein. A means (ECU 1) for calculating the width of the change in the equiv. ratio calculates the width of the change in the equiv. ratio based on the air-fuel ratio outputted by the sensor 18. A means (ECU 1) for deciding the deterioration of the catalyst issues information on the deterioration of the catalyst when the width of the change in the equiv. ratio with respect to the width of the change in the correction factor for feeding back of the air-fuel ratio exceeds the set value. The deterioration of the catalyst is quantitatively recognized in this way.

    • PURPOSE:To speedily activate the whole catalyst by installing a heater containing catalyst in turning-up/down state directly on the upstream side of a catalytic converter and holding the heater in erection state up to the time when the catalyst for purifying exhaust gas is sufficiently activated and then switching the heater to a turned-down state after activation. CONSTITUTION:A catalytic converter 1 installed into the exhaust system of an automobile is formed by accommodating a catalyst 3 for purifying exhaust gas into a converter container 2. In this case, a heater 5 containing catalyst which can be switched between a horizontally turned-down state for the flow direction of the exhaust gas A and the nearly vertical erection state is arranged on the upstream side of the exhaust gas A in the container 2. In the heater 5, a nichrome wire 7 meandering into S-figure form is installed in circular frame form onto a body 6, and a catalytic metal 8 is held on the exposed part of the nichrome wire 7. The heater 5 is allowed to electrically conduct before the engine start, and when the temperature rises to the temperature for sufficiently activating the catalyst 8, the heater 5 is erected, and then, after the catalyst 3 is sufficiently activated, the heater 5 is turned down.

    • PURPOSE:To judge the rich/lean state of the air-fuel ratio immediately after a start by setting a dead zone with the preset width near the reference voltage applied to output terminals of oxygen detecting means for the exhaust gas, and interrupting the feedback control when the terminal voltage is a value within the dead zone. CONSTITUTION:When the reference voltage is applied to output terminals of oxygen detecting means 40 and 42, the output voltage is changed across the reference voltage in response to the oxygen concentration, the output voltage is lower than the reference voltage when the air-fuel ratio is on the lean side, and it is higher than the reference voltage on the rich side. Activation can be judged by detecting that the output voltage is off the dead zone, if it is increased over the dead zone, the air-fuel ratio is lean-corrected, if it is decreased, the air-fuel ratio is rich-corrected. The output voltage is changed near the reference voltage, when the terminal voltage is equal to the ground level voltage, it can be judged that the output terminal side of the oxygen detecting means is short-circuited to the ground.

    • PURPOSE:To make it possible to make a decision on the activities of O2-sensors in an early stage by allowing the device to output activity-information of O2- sensors when senser output voltage is above (or below) a decision voltage being a specified value more (or less) than a reference voltage for deciding an air fuel ratio. CONSTITUTION:Operating condition detection means such as an air flow sensor 11, an intake air temperature sensor 12, a throttle sensor 14, etc. are provided, and first and second O2-sensors 17, 18 are installed on the upstream and downstream sides of a converter 9 in an exhaust passage 3, output signals from these sensors being inputted to ECU. ECU then compares O2-sensor output voltages with a reference voltage under the condition where the O2-sensors are activated, decides an air-fuel ratio, and controls a fuel injection valve 8 to feedback control the air fuel ratio based on the decided air fuel ratio. In this instance, the decision of activity of O2-sensors is performed as follows: when the sensor output voltages are above (or below) the detection voltage being a specified value more (or less) than the reference voltage, ECU decides that O2-sensors 17, 18 are activated.
