SOLUTION: The processing unit is provided with a window 73, that extracts data of each dot in a prescribed area around a dot being an object of bit map data, a pattern recognition section 74 that recognizes the shape of the line segments of a border between a black dot area and a white dot area, for generating code information consisting of plural bits denoting a characteristic of the shape of the line segments, and a memory block 75 that reads and outputs correction data by using the code information as an address. An image phase correction data setting circuit 78 generates image phase correction data, corresponding to image density correction data read from the memory block as to each dot based on information on a bit denoting an upward slant to the right or a downward slant to the right in a slant of the line segment, a bit denoting whether the line segment is close to a horizontal line segment or a vertical line segment, a bit denoting whether a target pixel is a white pixel or a black pixel, and a bit which denotes whether the position of the target pixel is above or below the line segment, when the target pixel is a white pixel in the code information consisting of plural bits denoting the characteristic of the line segment generated by the pattern recognition section.

    • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To achieve the enhancement of image quality by performing the jaggy correction of a contour line with respect to image data developed in a bit map form and to realize the reduction of the capacity of a memory block at the same time. SOLUTION: A pattern confirming part 74 recognizes the segment shape of the boundary part of the black and white dot regions of the image data extracted through a window 73 not only to form code data of a plurality of bits showing characteristics of the segment shape confirmed with respect to objective dots but also to output a discrimination signal showing whether dots are necessary for correction.     • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To simplify the selection of correction data and to reduce the capacity of memory for storing the correction data, when using multilevel image data as the correction data. SOLUTION: The image data expanded in the form of bit map are extracted through a window 73 and with respect to an attention dot at its center, the form of line segment at the border part of black and white dot regions is recognized by a pattern-recognition part 74 and replaced with the code information of plural bits. While utilizing that code information, it is discriminated whether or not the dot requires correction and for the correction required dot, the correction is performed by reading the correction data corresponding to this code information out of a memory block 75. In the image data which is expanded in the form of bit map, an edge discriminating means 78 discriminates whether each black dot is a right end dot, left end dot, isolated dot or any other dot in the main scanning direction of image data. According to the discriminated result, the correction data are determined for a phase showing the plotting position of image data.

The printer controller 54 transfers printing image data to the LD control section 52 as /LDON via a binary control bus 55 without being in synchronism with a clock in response to the output timing (returning timing of the main scanning synchronizing signal).
