    • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a separation membrane element provided with a carbon film in which the carbon film is efficiently formed by increasing the temperature rising speed in the firing of an organic material for forming the carbon film. SOLUTION: The method of forming the separation membrane element (1A) involves: the preparation of a porous base material (1) capable of being heated by a microwave; the formation of the carbon film precursor film by applying an organic material for forming the carbon film on the porous base material; the arrangement of the porous base material on which the carbon film precursor film is formed in an inert gas atmosphere and heating the porous base material by irradiating with the microwave; and the formation of the carbon film by firing the carbon film precursor film with the microwave irradiation heating.
