    • PURPOSE:To obtain the square beam made of FRM having uniform thermal deformation and high strength by impregnating metal into a preform formed by coiling fibers around the outer circumference of a square mandrel for plural times and providing bar-shaped metal or the like in the corner part for every fibrous layer. CONSTITUTION:The layer of fibers 11a is formed on the outer circumference of a square handle 13 or the layer of coiled fibers 11b on the cross. The layer 12 of bar-shaped metal or ceramics is provided in the corner part for every layer, and the layer of fibers 11b is furthermore formed thereon. The above stage is repeated. The formed preform 16 is heated to impregnate molten metal therein, and compounding is executed. Next, the outer circumference and inner circumference are mechanically worked to form a square beam 10 having final shape. In this way, the fattening in the coiling of fibers can be prevented, and the effect that thermal deformation is uniformized and reduced can be obtd. Furthermore, butt parts are not formed, so that the effect of high strength can be obtd.

    • PURPOSE:To obtain highly reliable fiber reinforced metal with no detachment of film by forming metallic matrix, reinforcing fibers embedded in this metallic matrix and projecting a part thereof on the matrix surface and the film on the matrix surface so as to embed the fibers. CONSTITUTION:This surface treated FRM 1 is produced by etching the surface over one or more layers as fiber layer form the surface in the range that the reinforcing fiber 2 on the FRM surface is not detached, in the etching process, and after that, in the film forming process, forming the film 4 with plating, etc., and embedding the projecting reinforcing fiber in there. In the surface treated FRM 6 manufactured in such way the film replaces the metallic matrix on the surface layer of FRM, i.e., the FRM 6 is formed integrally in a mechanically engaging condition that the film with the fiber by embedding the projecting reinforcing fiber in the film. Therefore, the joined strength of film becomes sum of stuck strength between the film and the metallic matrix and mechanical engagement force between the film and the reinforcing fiber, and even to heat cycle and heat impact, the detachment of film is not developed and the high reliability can be obtd.

    • PURPOSE:To obtain a whisker-reinforced glass having low density, small total area of interface between the whisker and the glass and improved mechanical characteristics, by dispersing whiskers in a glass matrix with continuous concentration gradient. CONSTITUTION:Whiskers are dispersed in a glass matrix 2 consisting of an amorphous or crystalline glass. The volume content of the whisker in the glass is made highest at a part where the reinforcing effect is especially required. The volume content of whisker in the matrix 2 is gradually decreased and is made lowest at the surface part (b) where the requirement of the reinforcing effect is not so serious. The whisker-reinforced glass of the present invention having the above structure has high specific elastic modulus, specific strength and fracture toughness compared with conventional material. The volume content of whisker is decreased to the necessary minimum level in the present reinforced glass and, accordingly, the total area of the interface between the whisker and the glass matrix can be decreased and the cost of the reinforced glass can be reduced. The whisker is e.g. SiC, Si3N4 or C whisker.
