摘要： An apparatus for generating neutrons and protons which includes a vacuum vessel having anode means substantially within vacuum vessel. The apparatus further includes at least one cathode wire grid which defines a central volume and is concave towards a central region of the vacuum vessel. The cathode wire grid is permeable to gas and to ions and disposed between the anode means. The apparatus further includes a means for introducing controlled amounts of reactive gas into the vacuum vessel and the central volume to obtain an internal pressure of the vacuum vessel. Finally, the apparatus includes means for applying an electric potential between the anode means and the cathode wire grid to produce a glow discharge caused by ions produced between the anode means and the cathode wire grid. The glow discharge is substantially determined by design criteria of the cathode wire grid and the internal pressure of the vacuum vessel.

摘要： Method and apparatus for generating a nearly mono-energetic beam of atoms at velocities on the order of several km/s (energies of 1-10eV) and for achieving modification of the surface properties of a target (40) by the beam. A gas is forced through a nozzle throat (16) into a previously evacuated expansion nozzle (28) resulting in the acceleration of the gas in a confined flow. Laser radiation is applied to the gas flow wto cause breakdown and dissociation of the gas into an atomic plasma. The plasma is allowed to expand within the nozzle cone (28) reaching a high velocity in the desired range. The beam is generated within a vacuum chamber (12).

摘要： A high performance field reversed configuration (FRC) system includes a central confinement vessel, two diametrically opposed reversed-field-theta-pinch formation sections coupled to the vessel, and two divertor chambers coupled to the formation sections. A magnetic system includes quasi-dc coils axially positioned along the FRC system components, quasi-dc mirror coils between the confinement chamber and the formation sections, and mirror plugs between the formation sections and the divertors. The formation sections include modular pulsed power formation systems enabling static and dynamic formation and acceleration of the FRCs. The FRC system further includes neutral atom beam injectors, pellet or CT injectors, gettering systems, axial plasma guns and flux surface biasing electrodes. The beam injectors are preferably angled toward the midplane of the chamber. In operation, FRC plasma parameters including plasma thermal energy, total particle numbers, radius and trapped magnetic flux, are sustainable at or about a constant value without decay during neutral beam injection.
