    • A recording medium for recording a code string comprising: encoded signals of an A-channel, i.e. (L+R)/2, generated from L- and R-channels; encoded signals of a B-channel, i.e. either one of L- and R-channels or (L-R)/2; channel constitution data which are the information for selecting B-channel signals; and encoding parameters.     • A signal processing unit and a method for compressing audio signals are described. In order to avoid overmodulation, a compressed multiplex signal generated by a multiplexer with compression, and an uncompressed multiplex signal generated by a multiplexer without compression are blended to form a blended output signal. The respective contribution of the compressed multiplex signal and the uncompressed multiplex signal to the blended output signal is controlled by means of a blend control signal. Whenever an overmodulation of the compressed multiplex signal is detected, the contribution of said uncompressed multiplex signal is temporarily increased. Thus, it is possible to provide a peak reduction method which does not reduce the audio quality of the transmitted signal.

    • To increase the signal to noise ratio of a frequency-demodulated stereo audio signal the stereo-multiplex signal at the transmitter side is modified so that the information of the stereo-difference signal is carried in only one sideband of the amplitude modulated stereo-difference signal, preferably in the lower sideband. Therefore, receivers which generate the stereo-difference signal on basis of only the lower sideband produce a higher signal to noise ratio of the frequency demodulated stereo audio signal than conventional FM-stereo receivers, because the noise bandwidth is reduced and in case only the lower sideband carries the information of the stereo-difference signal also the noise power spectral density is reduced. Conventional FM-stereo-receivers reproduce the modified stereo-multiplex signal without increase or decrease in quality.
