    • The invention relates to a method and a system for establishing a digital subscriber connection comprising a hybrid of optical fiber and metallic pair cable, in which method and system an information stream in digital form is transmitted by means of an optical fiber connection (2) from a central site (1) to equipment (3) connected to a subscriber's pair cable (4). The subscriber-specific DSL modem included in said equipment (3) is simplified in such a manner that the digital signal processing functions of said DSL modem, which in the prior art methods are located either entirely in said equipment (3) or entirely at the central site (1), are located in a distributed manner so that part of the digital signal processing functions of both the transmitter and the receiver are located at the central site, part of them are located in equipment (3), and the digital signals (15) passed between said signal processing functions are transported over one or more optical fibers (2) by multiplexing said signals from all subscribers in digital form onto the optical fiber or fibers. The divider point delimiting the part of the signal processing (14a, 14b) to be located at the central site is selected in such a way that the bit rate to be transported over the fiber will be sufficiently low, but on the other hand one strives to maintain the digital signal processing (12a, 12b) in said equipment (3) as simple as possible.
