An instantaneous voltage provided by a power supply (205) to the motor (202) is identified using a voltage signal received from a voltage sensor (210). A new average voltage is computed for the motor using the instantaneous voltage (214), a previously computed average voltage (218), and a weight factor (220) for the instantaneous voltage. A difference (222) between the new average voltage and the instantaneous voltage is compared to a selected threshold (224) to determine whether a regeneration condition exists. Operation of the motor (202) is controlled such that a duty cycle of the motor does not decrease in response to a determination that the regeneration condition exists.

    • A braking system for a universal motor having field windings includes a motor control circuit connecting the field windings to an external power supply, an energy storage device connected to the motor control circuit across the field windings, and a controller operably coupled to the motor control circuit and configured in a braking mode to disconnect the field windings from the external power supply and to connect the energy storage device to the field windings to produce a braking torque in the motor. The motor may further include brake windings that are selectively connected by the controller to a second energy storage device in the braking mode so that the braking torque is generated by both the field windings and the brake windings.

    • A power tool includes a brushless DC motor housed inside a tool housing, an input unit, and a control unit. The motor includes a rotor, a stator, and at least one sensor positioned to sense a state of the rotational position of the rotor inside the stator. A control unit controls commutation of the motor through a series of power switches coupled to the power supply. The control unit receives a current sensor state from the sensor and a user-selected speed from the input unit and determines whether the motor has reversed direction using the user-selected speed and the current sensor state. The control unit disables commutation of the motor if the motor has reversed direction until a proper current sensor state is received from the sensor.

    • The present invention relates to an apparatus and method for supplying hybrid power using regenerative power generated from an offshore plant. According to one embodiment of the present invention, provided is an apparatus for supplying hybrid power of an offshore plant, the apparatus comprising: a generator; an AC/DC converter for converting alternating current produced from the generator into direct current and supplying the direct current to a DC bus; a power load connected to the DC bus so as to regenerate power; a first DC/DC converter connected to the DC bus; a second DC/DC converter connected to the DC bus; a first power storage unit connected to the first DC/DC converter and storing power when a voltage of the DC bus is maintained at a level of a first threshold value or higher for a first time period; and a first resistance unit connected to the second DC/DC converter and consuming power when the voltage of the DC bus is maintained at the level of the first threshold value or higher for a second time period, wherein the second time period is longer than the first time period.
