    • A rate of temperature change detector, particularly for use as a "rate of rise" type fire detector, comprises two elements 42i43 of shape memory effect (SME) material, adapted to deflect in opposition when heated through their temperature transformation range. The lower element 43 is housed in a thermally conductive sheath 44 and hence reacts quickly to changing temperatures outside the detector, while the upper element 43 is surrounded by less thermally transmissive structure and reacts more slowly. The two elements are biased apart by a compression spring 51 and an additional spring 55 biases the lower element 42 only. A rod 52 connected with the lower element 42 carries an electrical contact 53 which closes the gap with a fixed contact 54 when the element 42 overcomes the biases of springs 51 and 55 and the further bias of element 43, the movement of the element 43 being thus related to the rate of rise of temperature experienced outside the detector. In another embodiment (Figure 1) the two SME elements are again subject to different rates of heat transmission from the environment but are biased equally, and the output is related to the difference in deflection between the two elements.
