    • The metal detection apparatus (1) comprises a detector housing (14) with an input aperture (11) and an output aperture (12) delimiting a transfer channel (10) along which products (P) are movable through a coil system (6) that defines a detection zone (60) and that comprises a transmitter coil (61) and a first and a second receiver coil (62, 63) dimensioned such that a current applied to the transmitter coil (61) induces a first receiver coil signal in the first receiver coil (62) and a second receiver coil signal in the second receiver coil (63), that do not compensate one another when a metal contaminant (C) is present in the detection zone (60), further comprising a test device (2) that comprises at least one test sample (S1, S2, ···) that is movable through the detection zone (60), a signal processing unit (4) for processing the receiver coil signals and for detecting signals relating to contaminants (C) and for detecting signals relating to the at least one test sample (S1, S2, ···), and comprising a control unit (5) for controlling measurement of products during normal operation and for controlling measurement of the at least one test sample (S1, S2, ···) during test intervals. According to the invention the test device (2) comprises a first reel unit (21) arranged at the input aperture (11) comprising a first reel drive unit (271), that is rotatably holding a first reel (291), a second reel unit (22) arranged at the output aperture (12) comprising a second reel drive unit (272), that is rotatably holding a second reel (292), and an elongated windable sample carrier (28) that is extending through the detection zone (60) and that has a first end, which is windably held by the first reel (291), that has a second end, which is windably held by the second reel (292), and that holds the at least one test sample (S1, S2, ···), and wherein either the first reel drive unit (271) or the second reel drive unit (272) is controllable by the control unit (5) to transfer the at least one test sample (S1, S2, ···) during test intervals through the detection zone (60), or the first reel drive unit (271) and the second reel drive unit (272) are controllable by the control unit (5) to transfer the at least one test sample (S1, S2, ···) during test intervals through the detection zone (60).

    • The metal detection apparatus comprises a balanced coil system with a transmitter coil (21) connected with a first coil terminal (211) and a second coil terminal (212) to a transmitter unit and with a first and a second receiver coil connected to an input of a receiver unit, whose output is connected to a signal processing unit, whose transmitter unit comprises a controllable frequency generator that provides an input signal with a selectable operating frequency to the input of an amplifier stage, whose output is connected to an excitation unit (14), which comprises a coupling transformer (143) with at least one input winding and at least one output winding having a terminal tapping (143T) and a plurality of intermediate tappings (143A, 143B, 143C) and which comprises a plurality of tuning capacitors (144A, 144B, 144C) and which comprises switching devices (141A, 142A; 141B, 142B; 141C, 142C), with which the output winding of the coupling transformer (143) and at least one of the tuning capacitors (144A, 144B, 144C) is connectable to the transmitter coil (21). According to the invention, a plurality of individually selectable excitation circuits is provided, each excitation circuit, when selected, comprising the transmitter coil (21), tapped windings of the output winding of the coupling transformer (143), one of the tuning capacitors (144A, 144B, 144C) connected to one another by a first semiconductor switching device (141A; 141B; 141C) and by a second switching device (142A; 142B; 142C) designed as an electromechanical relay, which are controllable by a channel selector (140) such that always one of the excitation circuits is selectable.
