    • A rescue balloon (10) for rescuing individuals from high places such as towers and building includes an enclosed envelope (20) for holding heated air under substantially greater than atmospheric pressure with a burner contained within the enclosed envelope (20) for burning a combustible gas to generate sufficient heated air under pressure in the envelope (20) to provide lift to the balloon (10). A rescue compartment (28) is carried by the envelope (20) for accommodating rescued individuals and a tether is provided for guiding the balloon (10) as necessary to effect rescues. The balloon (10) includes a porous blast shield (31) positioned within the envelope (20) to prevent direct contact between the envelope (20) and the flame of the burner. The blast shield (31) comprises an upright cylinder supported and secured in fixed relation within the envelope (20) by a plurality of catenaries (34) attached to the blast shield (31) and to the inner walls of the envelope (20) around its perimeter. The burn super-pressurizes the heated air within the envelope (20). The balloon (10) also includes a fuel supply (37) positioned within the envelope (20) for supplying fuel to the burner, and a cantilever beam (35A,35B) positioned in the envelope (20) for counterbalancing the load in the balloon (10) as the load varies according to the number and position of rescued individuals on the balloon (10) and the amount of fuel consumed. The cantilever beam (35A,35B) is positioned within the envelope (20) with the fuel supply (37) mounted on the beam (35A,35B). The fuel supply (37) is moved along the beam (35A,35B) in response to changes in the balance, or tilt, of the balloon envelope (20).

    • An emergency evacuation harness, such as is used for evacuating immobile patients, or similar persons, comprises longitudinal straps (14, 15) and transverse straps (11, 12) forming a grid-like structure of longitudinal and transverse loops. Attachment means (17, 18) are provided at each side of each transverse loop. Further longitudinal straps (20) extend from one end, having fastening means (21, 22, 24, 25) which are aligned with and connect to the attachment means (17, 18) when the further longitudinal straps (20) are pulled over the transverse loops to hold the patient in position. The further longitudinal straps (20) extend to form a handle loop (27). Lateral loop belts (21, 24) extending between the fastening means (22, 25) have releasable tightening means (23, 26).
