    • The machine for drying field crops includes lower and upper conveyors, the space between the two serving as a drying chamber. The upper conveyor is powered and drives the lower conveyor through a plurality of lateral flights that engage one another to keep the two conveyors in registry. A heating system is provided beneath the lower conveyor. Heat is delivered to a plenum between the two runs of the lower conveyor. The two conveyors are porous to allow heated air and light to pass therethrough. Heated air from the lower plenum passes through the lower belt and the drying chamber between the two conveyors, and into a collector plenum between the two runs of the upper conveyor, where it is exhausted to the atmosphere. Infrared or other lighting may also be provided in the two plenums. Alternatively, the machine embodiments may have multiple laterally situated conveyor runs.

    • A conveyor drive unit is provided for engaging and driving a belt type conveyor. The unit includes a motor drive unit and drive chain assembly having a drive chain driven by the motor along a drive path. The drive chain has drive lugs configured thereon to engage with drive dogs on the conveyor as the drive chain is driven along the drive path. The drive path defines the drive angle with respect to a straight path of the conveyor along the drive path. An adjustable positioning device is disposed relative to the drive chain assembly such that upon variable positioning of the drive chain assembly, the drive angle defined between the drive path of the chain and the straight path of the conveyor along the drive path varies. In this manner, the degree of engagement of the drive lugs with the drive dogs of the conveyor along the drive path can be adjusted by varying the drive angle.

    • A conveyor is disclosed having a mechanism for driving an endless chain, which is used for driving and optionally also for supporting the article-supporting parts of the conveyor. The mechanism comprises a drive belt that engages and drives on a number of wheels on the chain. By driving on the periphery of the rotating wheels instead of directly on the chain itself, the force between the drive belt and the point of engagement with the chain is halved whereby the construction may be made substantially lighter.
      In a preferred embodiment, the drive mechanism is displaceable arranged with respect to the stationary part of the conveyor along a path having an angle with the transport direction of the conveyor so that the reactive force on the drive mechanism caused by the driving force applied to the wheels causes the drive mechanism to be biased towards the wheels whereby the normal force from the mechanism on the wheels is self-adjusting, depending on the magnitude of the required drive force.
