    • Mobile phones and other portable devices are equipped with a variety of technologies by which existing functionality can be improved, and new functionality can be provided. Some aspects relate to visual search capabilities, and determining appropriate actions responsive to different image inputs. Others relate to processing of image data. Still others concern metadata generation, processing, and representation. Yet others concern user interface improvements. Other aspects relate to imaging architectures, in which a mobile phone's image sensor is one in a chain of stages that successively act on packetized instructions/data, to capture and later process imagery. Still other aspects relate to distribution of processing tasks between the mobile device and remote resources ("the cloud"). Elemental image processing (e.g., simple filtering and edge detection) can be performed on the mobile phone, while other operations can be referred out to remote service providers. The remote service providers can be selected using techniques such as reverse auctions, through which they compete for processing tasks. A great number of other features and arrangements are also detailed.

    • The invention relates to a method for generating a sound series of photographs. A sound sequence is generated by a photographic apparatus and is audible to the user of the apparatus. At various moments during the sound sequence, the user takes pictures and the apparatus stores the moment of the shot. A table is generated by associating each photograph to a moment of the sequence when it was taken. The sound sequence is then ended, thus completing the series of photograph shots. The photographs are then assembled in order to form a single panoramic image, a portion of the panoramic image being then displayed by animation. The panoramic image thus created, the sound sequence and the table are then assembled in order to form a sound panoramic image. During the reproduction of the sound panoramic image, each photograph is displayed at the moment associated by the table. The invention also relates to a photographic apparatus for generating the sound panoramic image, and to an apparatus for reproducing the sound panoramic image.

    • A digital still camera includes an image-capturing device, a recording device that records a subject image captured by the image-capturing device into an image recording medium, a first monitor device and a second monitor device. The images repeatedly captured by the image-capturing device are displayed in real time at the first monitor device and, at the same time, a photographic support image having been captured by the image-capturing device is displayed at the second monitor device. A single image or a plurality of images recorded in the image recording medium, for instance, may be displayed at the second monitor device as the photographic support image. Alternatively, an image obtained by partially enlarging the image displayed at the first monitor device may be displayed at the second monitor device.

    • A digital panorama camera is capable of forming, in real time, a wide view still image from a dynamic sequence of images generated during a recording operation by panning the camera to capture a scene. The camera shoots each frame of the sequence with a certain angular field of view at 30 frames per second, for example. The wide view still image has an apparent field of angular view that is greater than that of the image of each frame. The images of the sequence are connected together by determining a shift in position between adjacent images and then overwriting each image to a wide view image buffer after shifting the image by the shift amount. Determining the shift amounts and overwriting the image buffer is accomplished in less time than the interval between shooting consecutive images so that the display of the wide view image can be updated in real time for a user's observation. The amount of shift in position is determined using global pattern matching between adjacent images by taking the projections of the intensity values of the pixels in the horizontal and vertical directions of the images being compared. The projections are subjected to collation processing to identify the amounts in shift in each direction.
