    • Fast recovery is provided from transient loss of a received carrier in a satellite or terrestrial modem. A carrier tracking loop, loop filter and steering loop are provided in the modem. The occurrence of a transient condition affecting the carrier tracking loop is detected. The loop filter is flushed in response to the transient detection for a time period dependent upon an anticipated length of the transient condition. A voltage of the loop filter is steered toward a predetermined pre-transient value during the flushing step to minimize any change in frequency of the carrier tracking loop when the loop filter is flushed. After the filter has been flushed, the carrier tracking loop attempts to quickly reacquire the carrier.
