摘要： A tape drive (12) includes a transducer head (26), a tape carrier (24), a tape displacement structure (36) and a cleaning device (28). The transducer head (26) is configured to read information from a data tape (22) that is received by the tape drive (12). The tape carrier (24) is configured to deliver a data tape (22) in association with the transducer head (26) along a travel path (33). The tape displacement structure (36) is configured to bias a received tape (22) away from the transducer head (26). Finally, the cleaning device (28) is configured to engage the transducer head (26) for cleaning when the data tape (22) is biased from the transducer head (26). The cleaning device (28) and the transducer head (26) cooperate to enable cleaning of the transducer head (26) without removal of the data tape (22). A method is also disclosed.

摘要： The present invention provides a method of producing thin film elements which reduces the damage caused by handling the individual thin film elements. The method disclosed teaches formation of rows of completed thin film elements, such as air bearing sliders, defined by one of two methods namely: wafer processing or row processing to form partial cuts between device elements. The resulting partial cuts preserve the row structure after fabrication, e.g., for inspection and packing, but allow easy separation of the completed sliders just prior to assembly.

摘要： An actuator system for a record and/or read head. The head is mounted in a structure which is movable in multiple directions around a pivot point (72). The head is mounted to an end of the structure opposite the pivot point. The actuator system is preferably used with a stationary media (5) which has a curved surface in the shape of a portion of a sphere with the center of the sphere being the pivot point of the actuator. The head is preferably an optical head with an objective lens (4) mounted at the end of an elongated actuator arm structure (70) which pivots around the pivot point. The remaining optical elements and the emitter (82) and detector (88) of the optical system are mounted farther up on the structure so that their weight is closer to the pivot point to reduce the inertia of the actuator arm.
