    • An optical modulator 1C has a substrate 2 of an electro-optic material and having first and second main faces, an optical waveguide formed on the substrate 2 and having first branched part 5 and a second branched part 3, and ground electrodes 4A, 4C and a signal electrode 4B provided on the side of the first main face of the substrate. The first branched part 5 and second branched part 3 are provided between the edges of the ground electrodes 4A, 4C and the edge of the signal electrode 4B, respectively. Microwave electric fields are applied onto interacting parts of the first branched part 5 and second branched part 3, respectively, to modulate light propagating in the first branched part 5 and second branched part 3, respectively. The integral values of field intensities over interaction lengths with electrodes in the first and second branched parts are different from each other so that a predetermined chirp amount is obtained.

    • A multi-quantum-well Mach-Zehnder optical phase modulator selectively generates positive and negative frequency chirp. The modulator has an asymmetric input y-junction coupler and an asymmetric output y-junction coupler joined by interferometric arms defining two optical paths of unequal length so as to generate a fixed phase difference of π or an integral odd multiple thereof. The modulator has electrodes on each arm for receiving modulating electric fields in a push-pull relationship. A control electrode is provided on one of the arms for receiving a control electric field. The modulator, when driven without any control electric field generates negative frequency chirp, and selectively generates positive frequency chirp in response to adjustment of the control electric field. As an alternative, the length differential between respective arms can be selected to generate a phase difference of π/2, in which case control electrodes are required on each of the interferometric arms. A method of selectively generating a modulated optical signal having selectively configurable frequency chirp is also described.

    • An integrated optical modulator of the Mach-Zehnder type has a waveguide which, for part of its length, is divided into two waveguide sections (11, 12) arranged logically in parallel. Incoming light is divided to pass along the two sections (11, 12) and is then recombined before leaving the modulator. Each waveguide section has a pair of electrodes (13, 14) and (14, 15) associated therewith to generate an electric field through which the respective waveguide section passes, though there may be a single electrode (14) between the two waveguide sections (11, 12) to serve as one electrode of each pair, with the other electrode of each pair commoned. The physical arrangement of one waveguide section (11) and its associated electrodes (13, 14) is different from that of the other waveguide section (12) and its associated electrodes (14, 15), such that the electric fields to which light propagated along the two waveguide sections (11, 12) are respectively subjected are different when a single driving voltage is applied to the electrodes (13, 14, 15) associated with the waveguide sections. In an alternative arrangement there is provided an amplitude modulator (30) followed by a phase modulator (31).
