    • An apparatus for controlling the operation of a water turbine or a pump turbine equipped with an inlet valve (8), and guide vanes (6) adapted to suffer an opening or closing control by a speed governor (13) includes:

      ( 1 ) a device for detecting a rotation speed of the water turbine or the pump turbine during a power generation operation,
      (2) a load rejection control device (17) including,

      (a) a load rejection detector (19) connected to receive the rotation speed for comparing the rotation speed of the water turbine or the pump turbine with a first prescribed value and for producing a load rejection signal when the rotation speed of the water turbine or the pump turbine becomes greater than the prescribed value,
      (b) a governor state detector (20) for receiving an input signal and for judging whether or not a speed governor performs a normal operation based on the input signal to produce a jugement signal when the speed governor is judged as being normal,
      (c) an inlet valve open order device (23) connected to receive the judgement signal for producing an output signal when neither an emergency shutdown order nor a quick shutdown order is issued,
      (d) an inlet valve close order device (22) connected to receive the load rejection signal and connected to receive the output signal for producing an inlet valve close order based on the load rejection signal and the output signal, and

      (3) an inlet valve control device (18) connected to receive the inlet valve close order and connected to receive the output signal of the inlet valve open order device for producing a control signal, to close the inlet valve to a prescribed opening when the inlet valve close order is received and for producing a control signal to open the inlet valve to a maximum opening when the output signal is received.

      A method for controlling the operation of a water turbine or a pump turbine equipped with an inlet valve, and guide vanes adapted to suffer an opening or closing control by a speed governor is also disclosed.

    • An apparatus for controlling the operation of a hydraulic machine (1) such as a multi-stage pump turbine having a plurality of runners (3, 4) mounted on a common shaft (2) and guide vanes (8, 9) arranged around respective runners to adjust the flow rate of water supplied to respective runners. The controlling apparatus has a speed detection means (17) for detecting the speed of the hydraulic machine, comparator means (73A) for comparing the detected speed signal (14) with a speed command (71) to produce a stroke signal (S 02 ) in accordance with a speed deviation signal (S 01 ) obtained through the comparison, driving means (20, 40) for opening and closing the guide vanes (8, 9) associated with any selected runner in accordance with the stroke signal (S O2 ), and connecting means (21, 41) for connecting the stroke signal generating means to the driving means for the guide vanes associated with the other runner or runners in such a manner that a predetermined relationship is maintained between the opening degree of the guide vanes of the selected runner and the opening degree or degrees of the guide vanes associated with other runner or runners.

    • A method and system for optimizing performance of a Kaplan turbine power generating unit are provided wherein an optimal "N-dimensional" virtual cam is populated with gate and blade positional settings producing maximum power output for a set of N operating parameters. The preferred parameters include head, flow, power generation level, physical situation of the unit, operating state of neighboring units, trash rack loss and a parameter indicative of cavitation (such as relative submersion level). When the system detects a unique set of operating conditions for which optimization is needed, an iterative optimization search is performed for the best gate and blade positional settings, which are then saved in memory (populating the cam matrix) for subsequent use when the same operating conditions are encountered. The optimal matrix divides parameters having ranges into range segments and treats other parameters as having discrete states. The optimization search is preferably performed while maintaining flow constant, and a flow characteristic search is performed to determine candidate gate and blade settings resulting in constant flow.
