摘要： An internal combustion engine provided with an exhaust purification catalyst (13) arranged in an exhaust passage, a hydrocarbon feed valve (15) arranged upstream of the exhaust catalyst (13), and a hydrocarbon feed device (60) for feeding hydrocarbons to the hydrocarbon feed valve (15). The hydrocarbon feed device (60) has the function of making an injection pressure PX of the hydrocarbon feed valve (15) increase, but does not have the function of making it decrease. The injection pressure PX of the hydrocarbon feed valve (15) includes a limit injection pressure PZ which causes slip through of hydrocarbons at the exhaust purification catalyst (13). When the injection pressure PX of the hydrocarbon feed valve (15) exceeds an allowable injection pressure PZO which is lower than the limit injection pressure PZ by exactly a predetermined pressure, the hydrocarbon feed valve (15) injects hydrocarbons to thereby make the injection pressure PX of the hydrocarbon feed valve (15) fall.

Malfunctioning components are identified using these measurements and calculations.

摘要： In an internal combustion engine, a hydrocarbon feed valve (15), NO x storage catalyst (13), particulate filter (14), and electric resistance type sensor (29) are arranged in an engine exhaust passage in this order from an upstream side. The electric resistance type sensor (29) generates an output value corresponding to the amounts of deposition of particulate matter and hydrocarbons which are contained in the exhaust gas and deposited at the sensor part thereof. From the change of the output value of the electric resistance type sensor (29), it is judged if the hydrocarbons have slipped through the NO x storage catalyst (13) and if the particulate matter has slipped through the particulate filter (14).

摘要： An occluding member is provided in an exhaust system of an internal combustion system, to thus trap and desorb a plurality of types of hydrocarbons having different boiling points. First calculation means estimates a distribution of presence of the hydrocarbons to be trapped by the occluding member for each type and calculates an occlusion quantity of the occluding member 2 from the quantity of trapped hydrocarbons for each type. Further, there is performed control for purifying the hydrocarbons occluded in the occluding member according to the occlusion quantity calculated by the first calculation means.
