摘要： A sound attenuating heat exchanger (16) for an internal combustion engine (12) includes a housing (24), a barrier wall (26) and a fin (28). The housing (24) includes an exhaust inlet (44), an exhaust outlet (46), a coolant inlet (48) and a coolant outlet (50). The exhaust inlet (44) is connected to the exhaust outlet (46) by an exhaust flow passage (52). The coolant inlet (48) is connected to the coolant outlet (50) by a coolant flow passage (54). The barrier wall (26) fluidly separates the exhaust flow passage (52) from the coolant flow passage (54). The fin (28) extends from the barrier wall (26) into the exhaust flow passage (52), and includes a resonator (76,78) adapted to attenuate sound waves travelling through exhaust gas within the exhaust flow passage (52). The barrier wall (26) and the fins (28) are adapted to exchange heat energy between the exhaust gas flowing through the exhaust flow passage (52) and coolant flowing through the coolant flow passage (54).

A passive means (5, 4) utilizes exhaust flow energy (2) for induction of air into engine exhaust gas, and a duct (3) transfers the exhaust gas together with the inducted air into the reaction chamber (7) for thermal oxidation. To achieve a high degree of efficiency the thermal oxidation is facilitated by thorough mixing of air and exhaust gas by recirculation means (9) to insure gas phase thermal reaction.

摘要： An exhaust purification apparatus comprising an expansion pipe and a thin catalyst in the exhaust system of an internal combustion engine. Two openings for discharging an exhaust gas are formed in the peripheral wall of the expansion pipe at the end thereof on the upstream side in its longitudinal direction, and center portions of gas-permeable thin catalyst in their transverse direction are disposed separately round the expansion pipe in such a manner as to oppose the openings for the exhaust gas. Both side portions of the thin catalyst are curved towards the expansion pipe and are welded integrally to the outer peripheral surface. The outer periphery of the thin catalyst is sealed by a thin sealing plate as a seal member, and an opening is formed in the sealing plate on the opposite side to the openings for the exhaust gas of the expansion pipe. A communication pipe whose upper end is fitted into the opening of the thin sealing plate penetrates through an opening of a muffler casing which is disposed substantially adjacent to, and in parallel with, the expansion pipe. The lower end of the communication pipe has a U-shaped section which is open towards the downstream side of the muffler casing. According to this construction, the exhaust gas can come into contact with the thin catalyst without being cooled by the expansion pipe or affected by the catalytic reaction heat. Therefore, a purification ratio and scavenging efficiency can be improved, and the size of the purification apparatus can be reduced.

摘要： An arcing electron stream apparatus and method for reducing pollutants in a fluid. The device includes first and second electrodes and a chamber there-between. Voltage is impressed between the electrodes at a frequency, thereby causing a plurality of arcing electron streams to occur between the electrodes. The electrodes have stepped surface such that the central first section of the electrodes are in closer proximity to each other than are the outer second sections. This stepped configuration causes arcing electron streams to progressively be formed along the electrodes and, thus, traverse throughout the chamber, thereby effectively treating molecules within the chamber.

The muffler for an internal combustion engine comprises a casing (10), a vortex diffusing means (20), a vortex generating cylinder (30) and a vortex generating member (40). The vortex diffusing means (20) is mounted in the casing (10) and is connected to an exhaust inlet pipe (21). The vortex generating cylinder (30) is positioned in the casing (10) at its first side and is protruded into the exterior at its second side, and is provided with a tail pipe (33) at its exterior end. The vortex generating member (40) is axially mounted in the vortex generating cylinder (30).
