    • A drive mechanism is disclosed for a document feeder which is used in supplying documents to-be-copied onto the glass top of a copy machine.
      The drive mechanism includes a set of feed wheels (31, 37) which remove the document to-be-copied from a document support and by rotating in one direction move the document to-be-copied against a set of drive wheels (51, 55). The drive wheels, when rotated in one direction, move the document onto the glass top of a document copier against a stop (34), where the document is copied. Thereupon the drive wheels rotate in the opposite direction to remove the copied document from the glass top of a copying machine and deposit the copied document into a receiving tray.

    • A sheet feeder includes a plurality of roller pairs (19,20), which are drive roller segments and driven roller segments that press against the drive roller segments, disposed in pairs at a downstream side of a reading point. At least an outer layer of each of the drive roller segments is constructed of a material, such as a rubber, having a high coefficient of friction relative to a document sheet and at least an outer layer of each of the driven roller segments is made from a material having a low coefficient of friction relative to the document sheet. The drive roller segments are disposed on an axis (30) perpendicular to a sheet feed direction, whereas the driven roller segments are disposed on axes (29) inclined to the sheet feed direction symmetrically about a centerline of a width of the document sheet. Further, the axes of the driven roller segments are inclined such that the end of each of the segment's axis furthest from the centerline is on one of an upstream or downstream side of a sheet feed direction and an end closest to the centerline is on one of a downstream or upstream side of the sheet feed direction opposite that of the other end.

    • A drive roller for an ink-jet printer. The drive roller has a media engaging surface that is roughened by grit blasting along an entire media engaging longitudinal peripheral extent. The surface is hardened by anodizing. The roller is relatively inexpensive to fabricate yet has a small error on diameter and run out, and high traction due to the surface roughness, to provide highly accurate media positioning performance. The drive roller rotates about shaft mounted bearings. The shaft journal is formed with a small raised bump, which has very loose diametrical tolerance requirements, but is short in comparison to the bearing length dimension. When the bearing is press fit onto the shaft journal, the material forming the raised bump is sheared by the bearing. The sheared material drops into a recess on the journal, and does not interfere with the axial positioning of the bearing. The axial position of the bearing is controlled by placing the bearing next to a shoulder formed on the shaft.
