    • A system is provided for utilizing spool movement information in a motorized seat belt (MSB) control system algorithm to achieve better levels of comfort and safety. The MSB control system algorithm controls execution of multiple modes including a no friction mode, a stowage mode, a slack reduction mode, an out of position warning mode, a medium pull-back mode, and a high pull-back mode. The MSB control system algorithm also controls execution of a low power mode initiated after the other vehicle modules are put to sleep to provide the ability to stow the seat belt after the vehicle has been idling for some period of time. The MSB control system algorithm also controls belt monitoring functions defined based on a buckle switch state that indicates the buckled or unbuckled state of the seat belt. Belt monitoring consists of spool rotation being converted to counts based on the resolution provided by the spool sensor.

    • A restraint system is described for use in a passenger seating area of a motor vehicle. The system includes a seat belt assembly 12 having a webbing 22 extending between a lower anchor 28 and a belt retractor 32 positionable across the body of an occupant. A sensor 42 is coupled with the belt retractor 32 to sense a change in the condition of the seat belt assembly. An inboard anchor disposed opposite the seat belt assembly includes a buckle element 34 adapted to engage and secure a latch element 30 on the webbing 22. An adjustment mechanism 44 connected to the inboard anchor is configured to move the inboard anchor between a stowed position and at least one deployed position. A controller 40 monitors the sensor 42 to detect change in the condition of the seat belt assembly and instructs the adjustment mechanism 44 to position the inboard anchor between the stowed and at least one deployed positions.

    • A restraint system 10 for use in a passenger seating area of a motor vehicle includes a seat belt assembly 12 disposed adjacent the passenger seating area which is adjustable between a stowed position and at least one deployed position. The seat belt assembly 12 including a flexible webbing 22 positionable across the body of an occupant 18 and an inflatable section 50 disposed within the webbing 22 is inflated by a source of gas pressure 44 under the control of a controller 36. The controller 36 is arranged to monitor vehicle conditions and is operative to inflate the inflatable section 50 such that the belt assembly 12 is presented in a deployed position for securing around the occupant 18 when they occupy a seat 14 in the vehicle.
