摘要： A process is described for the preparation of water-soluble cellulose hydrolysis products, which comprises admixing cellulose with an ionic liquid capable of solvating or dissolving at least some of the cellulose, said ionic liquid being a compound comprised solely of cations and anions and which exists in a liquid state at a temperature at or below 150°C, the cations in said ionic liquid having the general formula:

in which Z represents a nitrogen or phosphorus atom, R 1 represents a methyl or ethyl group, each of R 2 and R 3 , which may be the same or different, is selected from C 4-8 alkyl, optionally-substituted benzyl, optionally-substituted phenyl, and C 5-7 cycloalkyl, and R 4 represents C 1-8 alkyl, optionally-substituted benzyl, optionally-substituted phenyl or C 5-7 cyclohexyl; in which the optional substituents on a benzyl or phenyl ring are one, two or three substituents selected from C 1-4 alkyl or alkoxy groups, halogen atoms and nitro groups; and treating the resulting solvate or solution with an acid in the presence of water, said acid having a pKa in water of less than 2 at 25°C.

摘要： The invention relates to a system for focussing and/or for collimating an ion beam (7, 10), particularly of a beam of accelerated protons (7, 10). To this end, the system has a lens with a lens body (8) that can be passed through by the ion beam. Means are provided for generating an, in particular, electrostatic field, which propagates inside the lens body and which focuses the ion beam. The lens body has a wall of a small thickness. The field-generating means have a source for electromagnetic radiation, i.e. a laser, whose emitted beam (9) is oriented toward the outside of the wall of the lens body. The thickness of the wall and the quality of the electromagnetic radiation is selected in such a manner that the radiation generates free electrons, which exit the wall and accumulate in an electron cloud on the exit side of the wall.

摘要： A method of coating a metallic article having an at least part-metallic surface comprising a first metal, with a surface having a pre-determined wettability, the method at least comprising the steps of: (a) coating at least a part of the metallic article with a layer of a second metal to provide a metal-metal bonded surface, said surface being rough either prior to or because of step (a); and (b) contacting the metal-metal bonded surface of step (a) with a material to provide the surface having the pre-determined wettability. The first metal may be one or more of the group comprising: iron, zinc, copper, tin, nickel and aluminium, and alloys thereof including steel, brass, bronze and nitinol for example. Preferably, the second metal is coated onto the first metal using electroless Galvanic deposition. The nature of the coated metallic article is non-limiting, as the ability of the present invention is to provide a tailored surface with a pre-determined wettability thereon, including superhydrophobic and superhydrophilic wettability. This allows the invention to be capable of application to a wide range of metal types used in different fields.

摘要： A plasmonic coupling device (1) comprising a first structure (2), and a second structure (3) comprising two or more conductive nanoparticles (7), wherein each nanoparticle is elongate and is attached to the first structure such that it is oriented with a major axis thereof substantially perpendicular to the first structure. In a plasmonic coupling device comprising such nanoparticles, radiation incident on the device can produce localised surface plasmons in the nanoparticles. The localised surface plasmons can become deiocalised along the device, due to the near-field electromagnetic interaction between the two or more nanoparticles or between the one or more nanoparticles of an assembly and a nearby assembly or assemblies. This interaction allows for electromagnetic energy, and the radiation, to be efficiently coupled between the nanoparticles or between the assemblies of one or more nanoparticles.
