    • To eliminate needle-stick risk by encapsulating the needle of a syringe immediately after discharge of syringe contents (43), the entire syringe, such as a pre-filled miniature glass syringe (40), is housed in a device comprising a hollow body (10), a spring (20) and a plunger (30). The barrel (41) of the syringe (40) is held in the body interior against the force of the spring (20) by latching formations (IS) internal to the body (10). The plunger (30) itself is hollow so as to provide a chamber (36) to receive the syringe piston means (45, 46) and at least part of the barrel (41) upon retraction of the syringe. The plunger (30) has deflectable engagement elements (33) at its forward end so that as it is pushed in to the body (10), it reliably displaces the syringe piston/rod (45, 46) to discharge the syringe contents (43) via a hollow needle (42), the elements (33) ultimately being deflected outwards as the contents are fully discharged so as not to impede syringe retraction into the hollow plunger (30). The plunger (30) also has latch opening projections (34) at its forward end which, as the plunger (30) is pushed home, serve to disengage, e.g. by deflection, the latch formations (18). The syringe barrel (41), together with the needle (42) and piston means (45, 46) are then immediately retracted into the device by force of the spring (20).

    • A fluid filled cartridge (110) having a fixed needle (107) and a piston assembly (111, 131, 133) for expression of its contents (112) is mounted inside an applicator (101). In order to extend the needle (107) from the body (101) prior to cartridge contents expression and without premature leakage of fluid therefrom, an actuator (120), which may be operated by spring (125) or manually, is mounted in the body to drive the cartridge forwards. This is accomplished by co-operating driving (126) and driven (110E) parts of the actuator and the cartridge (or any carrier it may have) which are decoupled by release formations, e.g. triggering extensions (128), in the applicator body (101) after the cartridge (110) has been moved sufficiently to extend the needle (107). Specifically, the driving part (126E) may be deflected outwardly by the triggering extension (128). The applicator (100) may also include provision, including, for example, forwardly mounted spring (113), for automatic needle retraction after cartridge contents expression. This may be accomplished by further driving extensions (132) on the actuator (120) being released, e.g. by the action of trigger rod (133), from their drive coupling with parts (131E) of the piston rod, e.g. by outward deflection of the latter, after the piston (111) has been depressed a sufficient distance to express the contents (112). A separate inventive feature is the deformability of the piston (111) so that force transmission to the trigger means (133) to initiate needle retraction only occurs upon full content expression when the piston has “bottomed out” within the cartridge (110).

    • A needle retraction medical device including a hollow body (10) and a plunger (20). The hollow body (10) has a first end (11) provided with a needle mounting hub (13) and a plurality of releasable latches (15) holding the needle mounting hub (13) against spring (14) bias. The latches (15) are formed integrally with the hollow body (10) and project longitudinally inside the hollow body (10) from a proximal end at or adjacent the first end (11) of the hollow body (10) to a free end. A respective opening (35) is provided in the body (10) radially inwards of each of the latches (15). The plunger (20) has a forward end insertable into the body (10) from a second end thereof, a hollow interior and a closed rear end. The plunger front end is operable, upon insertion of the plunger (20) into the body (10), to deflect the latches (15) radially outwards and thereby release the needle mounting hub (13) from the latches (15) so that the hub (13) together with the needle mounted thereby retract under spring action into the hollow interior of the plunger (20). A respective opening (30) is also provided in the hollow body (10) radially outwards of at least some of the latches (15) so that each such latch (15) connects to the material of the body (10) only at each side of its proximal end.
