    • Two sensors (10, 10') and an Operator Interface (30) are mounted on an envelope machine inline after the side seam gumming system (62, 64, 66). As the envelope (50) passes under the sensors (10, 10'), they measure the luminance / reflectivity of a certain spot on the envelope (50) where the side seam gum (20) should be located. The reflectivity of the side seam gum (20) will be different than that of the envelope (50) paper. If the reflectivity measurement at that position is within the preset values in the device, the envelope (50) is within the specification and nothing happens; the envelope (50) continues through the machine. If the measurement does not meet the values in the device, the envelope (50) is out of specification, and an output signal is returned. That output signal may be used for any purpose, but most commonly activates a red light, or marks the envelopes (50) as defective.

    • A packaging apparatus (10) includes a flexible insert (14) and a sealable wrapper (12). The flexible insert includes: a body (144) having a first face and a second face opposite the first face; a first flap (140) at a first edge (1441) of the body; and a second flap (142) at a second edge (1442) of the body, the second edge located opposite the first edge. The sealable wrapper includes: a first panel (121); and a second panel (122). The sealable wrapper is sized to enclose the flexible insert. The first face of the body of the flexible insert is configured to engage the first panel (121) of the sealable wrapper upon insertion of the flexible insert to the sealable wrapper. The first and second flaps (141,142) are configured to, upon the insertion, swing from the body of the flexible insert to engage the second panel (122) of the sealable wrapper such that a thickness of the packaging apparatus becomes substantially uniform.

    • A method and apparatus for measuring the thickness of flap seal gum (20) on an envelope (50) including establishing parameters for a desired thickness of seal gum and programming such parameters into a programmable logic controller (PLC). Sensing the reflectivity intensity of radiation from the gum thickness on envelopes in a production line and comparing such sensed reflectivity intensity to the parameters for the desired reflectivity intensity as programmed into the PLC. The PLC generates indicia such as alarm signals when the reflectivity intensity sensed does not conform to the preprogrammed parameters. The indicia may include activation of an ink jet sprayer to spray ink on envelopes having gum which does not conform to the preprogrammed parameters.
