    • A body yarn (B) forms plain jersey stitch loops in every needle wale of successive courses of the fabric. Alternating single courses (C-1 and C-3) include pile yarn (P) inlaid in alternating single wales (W-2 and W-4) of the plain jersey stitch loops of the body yarn while pile loops extend inwardly and across intervening single wales (W-3) of the plain jersey stitch loops of the body yarn. Intervening single courses (C-2) include pile yarn (P′) inlaid in intervening single wales (W-1,W-3,W-5) of the plain jersey stitch loops of the body yarn while pile loops extend inwardly and across alternating single wales (W-2,W-4) of the plain jersey stitch loops of the body yarn. The fabric is knit on a circular multifeed knitting machine with a pair of successive courses being knit as cylinder needles and dial hook elements pass through each successive series of three yarn feeding and knitting stations.

    • A readily replaceable restricting member (26) is within an annular receiving channel (24) that is defined by a cylindrical portion (14) of a circular knitting machine, and the restricting member is operative to restrict at least upward or downward movement of the sinkers (12) of the circular knitting machine. The sinkers (12) are operative for reciprocating radially relative to the cylindrical portion (14) and the restricting member (26) such that sliding contact is defined between the sinkers and the biased restricting member. In accordance with several of the embodiments of the present invention, each of the sinkers comprises an upper nib (38) and a lower nib (30), a radially extending slot (46) is defined between the upper nib and the lower nib, and the slot is open at the leading edge of the sinker. In accordance with several embodiments of the present invention, the restricting member is in the travel paths of the sinkers so that the biased restricting member (26) is at least partially received within the radially extending slots (46) in response to the radial reciprocating of the sinkers. In various combinations, upper surfaces (32) of the lower nibs contact the restricting member, lower surfaces (42) of the upper nibs contact the restricting member, and lower surfaces of the sinkers contact the restricting member, so that movement of the sinkers is restricted. In accordance with several embodiments of the present invention, the restricting member is biasedly engaged within the receiving channel (24).

    • A safety gate extends between and normally encloses the entire space between adjacent legs (15,17) of a circular knitting machine to prevent an operator from being injured by a knit fabric take-up roll mechanism (20) which rotates beneath the needle cylinder (11) and extends downwardly between the vertical support legs. The safety gate includes individual safety gate elements (30,31) each divided into an upper section(45,46) and a lower section (35,36) with the upper section being supported on the lower section for vertical movement between a raised closed position and a lowered open position. Each gate element is connected by hinges (34) on one side to one of the vertical support legs to permit the safety gate element to swing horizontally between closed and open positions between the vertical legs for permitting removal of the fabric take up roll. The upper section (46) of each safety gate element is movable to the lowered open position to permit access to the area immediately beneath the bed plate (10) without requiring horizontal swinging movement of both the lower and upper sections of the safety gate element.

    • An apparatus for detecting broken hooks (12) of needles (11) in a knitting machine having first and second cam faces defining a cam (20) for slidably receiving needle butts. The cam includes a raising cam portion (23), a stitch cam portion (25), and a welt cam portion (31) in which tension forces between yarn loops and hooks bias the butts of intact needles against the first cam face (21). The detector has a detector butt raising segment (32) wherein the second cam face in the welt cam portion is inclined away from the second cam face at the stitch position for urging butts toward the first cam face (21). A detector butt lowering segment (33) follows the detector butt raising segment (32), in which the first cam face (21) urges the butts toward the second cam face (22). A recess segment (34) follows the butt lowering segment. The recess is formed so that the second cam face (22) is sufficiently spaced from the first cam face (21) so that butts (13) of needles having broken hooks are urged into the recess segment (34) by the detector butt lowering segment (33), but butts of intact needles that are biased against the first cam face do not enter the detector recess segment. A sensor (35) identifies terminating ends (17) of needles (16) whose butts (13) are in the detector recess segment. The apparatus may further include means for stopping operation of the knitting machine when the sensor is activated. A method for detecting broken hooks is also provided, as are needles that are for use with the apparatus.

    • A hosiery inspecting and grading apparatus and a method of inspecting hosiery are provided that preferably has a boarding member arranged to mount a completed hosiery article thereon. The boarding member preferably is formed of a translucent material. An optical inspecting system (120) is positioned adjacent the boarding form (111, 112) and is arranged to inspect a completed hosiery article mounted on the boarding member. The optical inspecting system (120) preferably includes at least one light emitter (121) positionally aligned with the boarding member to emit light through a predetermined portion of a completed hosiery article mounted thereon and at least one light detector (126) positionally aligned with the at least one light emitter and the boarding member to detect the presence and absence of light traveling from the light emitter and through the predetermined portion of a completed hosiery article mounted on the boarding member so that presence and absence of defects in a completed hosiery article are thereby determined. The apparatus also has a grading and sorting system positioned downstream from the boarding member and the optical inspecting system and in electrical communication with the optical inspecting system to grade and sort a completed hosiery article responsive to electrical signals representative of presence or absence of defects received from the optical inspecting system.
