    • A compressible spring or shock attenuating apparatus is disclosed for axial insertion within an elongated hollow receptacle having a predetermined inner diameter. The compressible spring of the present invention comprises an elastomer body (16) having an outer diameter and a pair of axially spaced ends. A series of substantially equal annular crests (18) are axially disposed relative to each other on the elastomer body (16) between the spaced ends, with a periphery of the crests (18) defining an outer diameter for the elastomer body (16). The elastomer body (16) is specifically configured such that the outer diameter of the elastomer body (16) remains substantially constant even when the ends of the spring are compressed toward each other. According to the present invention, each crest (18) of the elastomer body (16) has a closed annular ring (30) fixed and extending thereabout to promote maintaining the outer diameter of said body substantially constant as the ends move toward each other while defining predetermined outer diameter for the spring. The predetermined outer diameter of the spring is greater than the outer diameter of the elastomer body (16) and is sized to the inner diameter of the receptacle whereby the rings (30) promote axial movements and inhibit snaking movements of said spring within the receptacle.

    • A wheel assembly, and a method and apparatus for fabricating the same, are disclosed. The wheel as­sembly (10) includes an annular bearing hub (12) and an annular tread layer (14) of thermoplastic elastomeric material, such as a copolyester polymer elastomer material, about the bearing hub (12). The tread layer (14) has an initial free radial thickness. The material is such that upon being radially compressed at least thirty percent of its initial radial thickness the material will retain a substantial portion of the thickness reduction after being compressed. The method and apparatus include applying a radial force by means of a cone-shaped wedge member (22) from within the tread layer while the outer periphery of the tread layer (14) is radially contained (16), the radially applied force being sufficient to compress the tread layer (14) at least thirty percent of its initial radial thickness. The bearing hub (12) is moved axially into the compressed annular tread layer (14) immediately behind the cone-shaped wedge member (22).
