    • A self-contained system to continuously monitor a mechanism (11) used to control or regulate fluid flow and provide a continuing indication of the status or condition of the monitored mechanism (11). A specific form of the invention employs a low frequency sonic-to-electrical transducer (18) that monitors opening and closing of a disk-type steam trap (11). The detected sonic signal is processed and sent to a microcontroller (30) that is programmed to develop a time-based, baseline data set representative of normal operation of the steam trap (11 )in the environment in which it operates. The baseline data set is compared against the data from on-line operations of the steam trap. As the environment and the steam trap (11) operation change during normal on-line operations, the baseline data set is updated to change with the changing environment and the changing steam trap (11) operation.

    • A rotatable valve closure element (14) carries an elastomeric annular seal (32) with respect to a metallic valve body. An adjustable nut (54) is threaded to the valve body and includes a recess (60) for receiving a lower stem (62) of the valve closure member. One or more interference members (70) are spaced radially between the nut and the lower stem, and permit axial movement of the lower stem and thus the annular seals with respect to the valve body, while enabling the valve closure member to freely rotate during normal use of the valve. According to the method of the present invention, the lower stem is positioned within the recess of the nut, interference members are then fitted therebetween, the subassembly is then connected to the valve body and the shaft end interconnected with the valve closure member, and the closure member and seal are then centered with respect to the valve body by rotating the nut, which is then locked in position with respect to the valve body when the desired axial position has been achieved.
