    • An optical disc drive is disclosed. The optical disc drive comprises a housing including an upper housing and a lower housing; and a herringbone pattern that is protruded toward the inner space of the housing on the inner surface of the upper housing and causes an air flow generated by the rotation of an optical disc to be switched to the direction of the optical disc. The herringbone pattern comprises at least one inflection point, and makes an acute angle at the inflection point relative to the direction of the air flow formed along the inner surface of the upper housing. Accordingly, the optical disc can be stably chucked and rotated by switching the air flow generated by the rotation of the optical disc to the direction of the optical disc.

    • An optical disk drive (ODD) is provided. The ODD includes an optical pickup unit; and at least one pickup guide for contacting with at least one guide (20) that guides a motion of the pickup unit, wherein the pickup guide includes at least one oil housing unit (60) for housing oil (OL) applied to the guide. The oil housing unit is provided in a quadrangular or triangular groove shape toward a portion contacting with the guide in the pickup guide. Further, the oil housing unit is formed at both sides of the pickup guide in a length direction of the guide, or when two pickup guides are coupled to at least one guide, the oil housing unit is formed only at a far position from the other pickup guide in each of the two pickup guides. Therefore, a contamination phenomenon of an optical pickup unit due to scattering of oil can be reduced.

    • A focus servo control method for an optical disc device is provided which compensates for variations present on the disc while printing a label on a label surface of the disc. The label surface of the disc is radially divided into a plurality of areas arranged about the center of the disc, and a focus swing operation is performed for each of the radially divided areas to detect an RF signal. Respective center points of pulses in the detected RF signal are regarded as optimal focus points, and focus driving voltages corresponding respectively to the center points are detected and stored in association with the corresponding areas. When a label is printed on the label surface, feed-forward focus servo control is performed based on the stored focus driving voltages. Accordingly, feed-forward focus servo control can be performed while compensating for variations the disc, thereby improving the label printing operation and quality of the resulting label.

    • A method for seeking a target position on a multi-layer disc is provided. When a target position seek operation requires a layer jump in an optical disc, a required horizontal movement direction for the optical pick-up is determined. If the optical pickup must move horizontally from the outer circumference to the inner circumference of the disc, the horizontal movement operation is performed first at the current layer, and then a layer jump operation is performed. Because the layer jump operation is performed at the inner circumference of the optical disc, where the optical pickup will not likely encounter a data area which includes location information, a target position seek operation which requires a jump between multiple layers of the disc can be precisely and rapidly performed.

    • Embodiments of a method and apparatus of identifying optical disk types according to the present invention can identify the type of an optical disk (e.g., DVD-RAM, DVD-RAM, or DVD+/-RW) based on comparisons between a plurality of signals. For example, comparisons between the magnitudes of DPD and DPP tracking error signals and their respective reference values can be used. If an optical disk is identified as DVD+RW or DVD-RW, embodiments according to the present invention can further determine whether the optical disk is DVD+RW or DVD-RW. For example, the frequency of a wobble signal resulting from the shape of tracks formed on the optical disk and variables that affect the wobble frequency (e.g., the rotational speed of the optical disk and the current track position) can be used.
