摘要： An apparatus and method are provided for reproducing replacement data recorded in a spare area of a disc, such as a DVD-RAM. The replacement data is temporarily stored in a memory provided in a disc reading or player apparatus or a RAM provided in a PC connected to the disc reading or player apparatus so that the temporarily stored data can be read without movement of an optical pickup to the spare area during a subsequent data reproducing operation. 摘要： A recording method and a malfunction detection method of an optical disc device are provided. The level of a signal driving a laser diode is detected during a recording operation. The detected level is compared with a reference limit, and the recording operation is controlled according to the comparison result. If the detected level exceeds the reference limit, a recording speed or power is adjusted downwardly, otherwise it is adjusted upwardly. If the detected level exceeds the reference limit, a malfunction in a front photodetector inside the optical disc device is reported to an external host. Appropriate control of the recording operation according to the disc reflection light incident on the front photodetector prevents degradation of recording quality. The reporting of the abnormality/malfunction in the optical disc device or the front photodetector makes it possible for the user to take a quick action against the abnormality or malfunction.

According to the method, pre-stored variables corresponding to respective manufacturers and respective recording pits of the optical disk are checked. A main pulse based on the checked variables and a sub pulse having a prescribed width are generated. The sub pulse is generated at a prescribed time prior to generating the main pulse. A driving signal for driving a LD to record data is generated upon receiving the main pulse and the sub pulse. Therefore, data recording operations are performed using the driving signal without overpower as in the conventional Mode 1 (e.g., Orange 1), that can take less computation and less time to form recording pits at a desired time/size for a recording period of time as in the conventional Mode 2 (e.g., Orange 2), which can result in improve recording quality (Fig. 5).
