摘要： An EL lamp includes a hole (13) for receiving a fitting (12) attached to a printed circuit board (11). The fitting has a base (16), a head (14), and a neck (15) connecting the head to the base. The diameter of the head is slightly larger than the diameter of the hole and the head fits through the hole by temporarily stretching the lamp. The lamp includes a substrate (31), a front electrode (32), a phosphor layer (33), and a rear electrode (34). The rear electrode faces the base. A first aperture through the rear electrode and the phosphor layer provides access to the front electrode. A second aperture through the front electrode and in the phosphor layer exposes a portion of the substrate, which is covered by the rear electrode. The first and second apertures are aligned with the holes to provide electrical connections to the front and rear electrodes.

In some applications (e.g., in wristwatches), the luminescent layer (16) includes phosphor, the insulating layer (12) includes barium titanate, and the rear electrode (14) includes silver, all distributed through the terpolymer. In other applications (e.g., in cellular phones or pagers), the rear electrode (14) includes carbon.

摘要： An electroluminescent (EL) lamp assembly (24) includes EL lamps (40) of selected limited size placed and secured upon a larger printed circuit substrate (35) employing surface mount techniques. The EL lamp assembly (24) includes a substrate (35) having a relatively large lamp receiving surface and relatively smaller lamps (40). At least one of these smaller lamps (40) is a multi-layer sheet-form EL lamp having a sheet-form layer containing EL particles, the layer disposed between a pair of sheet-form conductive layers, one of which is transparent for transmitting light emitted from the particles. The EL lamps (40) each have conductors (41a) exposed for engagement and connection with the conductive traces (36) on the lamp receiving surface of the substrate in a surface mounted face-to-face relationship according to a preselected illumination pattern and connected to the conductive traces.

A transparent, conductive layer (52) on a transparent substrate (51) is laminated to the phosphor layer and the temporary substrate is removed. The layers are applied from a slurry or ink and bladed to a uniform thickness across the width of the temporary substrate. The process can be continuous using rolls of material for the temporary substrate. The length of a lamp is limited by the length of the temporary substrate. The width of the lamp is determined by the size of the apparatus used to apply and to spread the layers.

摘要： An electroluminescent lamp unit includes a flat deformable substrate (35) of preselected size having smaller sheet-form flexible electroluminescent lamps (40) secured face-to-face at preselected positions on a surface of the substrate (35), the lamps (40) connected with conductive traces (36) on the substrate (35). The flat substrate (35) with secured lamps (40) can be deformed into a desired shape to provide a relatively inexpensive and reliable electroluminescent lamp unit applicable for a wide variety of applications. The flexible electroluminescent lamps (40) of the unit can be individually addressable and may have different colors or intensities. A method of manufacture of such units employs surface mount technology in an automated version, pick and place robots select and place the lamps as instructed, followed by ultrasonic welding (Fig. 3A-3D) or mechanical (Fig. 9) or adhesive fastening (Fig. 10).
