    • A device for removing debris (272) from a pit 35 containing water (271) comprises a track (277) which extends from below the surface of the water upwardly to an end located above a receptacle (37) into which the debris is to be placed. A scoop mechanism (273) runs along the track (277) and can be hauled from a first position located adjacent the bottom of the track to a second position adjacent the top of the track by a cable (284). The scoop mechanism includes a scoop (278) hingedly mounted on a trolley. The angular position of the scoop relative to the trolley is controlled by an actuator (306) in use, the scoop mechanism is lowered until the scoop (278) and the lower part of the trolley are immersed in the water in the pit. The upper end of the trolley remains above the level of the water. The scoop (278) is then rotated to the position shown in outline in Figure 18 so as to pick up debris (272) from the pit. The scoop mechanism is then hauled up the track by the cable (284) until the scoop is located above the container (37), whereupon the scoop is rotated back to the position shown in solid line in Figure 18 to release the debris into the container (37).

    • A fume burning system for improving the environmental quality of gaseous fluid emanating, e.g, from an incinerator comprises one or more reburn tunnels (41,42) in which the gaseous fluid is burnt. The size of the outlet openings (63,64) of the reburn tunnels is controlled by dampers (91,92) which are moveable from a position in which they partially close the outlets (as illustrated in Figure 6) and a position in which they do not obstruct the outlets. In the position illustrated in Figure 6 each damper typically covers a maximum of about 60% of its respective outlet opening. In the illustrated embodiment of the invention the dampers and hingedly mounted and controlled by actuators (94) via arms (93). The weight of the damper may partially be counterbalanced by a weight (99) connected to the damper by a cable (94). Alternatively, sliding dampers or butterfly dampers may be used. The position of the dampers is controlled in light of operating conditions to ensure optimum burning of the gaseous fluid.

    • An incinerator system for bulk refuse and hydrocarbon-containing liquids comprises an enclosed main chamber (32) having a fire-resistant floor means (33) for holding and burning material thereon, an inlet opening (231) for the introduction of solid bulk refuse, an outlet opening (67,68) for the egress of the gaseous products of combustion from said main chamber, and grate means (463) located within said main chamber adjacent to said inlet opening (231) and above said floor means (33)(see Fig.16). The grate means has hollow passageways therethrough and holds refuse newly introduced through said inlet opening (231) above said floor means (33) for a limited period of time and then allows said refuse to drop through to said floor means (33) while burning. Motion means (473,475) are coupled to said grate means (436), for moving said grate means in said main chamber. The motion means may comprise an air bag (475) and means (476) for inflating and deflating the air bag.

    • An incinerator system includes: a main chamber (32); double reburn tunnels (41,42); an excitor (134,158) within a reburn tunnel; a grate (234) near the incinerator's inlet (231) to permit the drying and initial combustion of refuse, and an ash scoop (278). The use of dual reburn tunnels (41,42), along with a damper (69,70) that permits the closure of at least one of them, permits the efficient and environmentally acceptable utilization of the main incinerator chamber (32) even with minimal refuse contained there. With less refuse, only one reburn unit (41,42) operates; it will still have sufficient heat and throughput to maintain, with minimal auxiliary fuel, the temperature needed for complete combustion. An excitor (134,158), or solid stationary object placed within the reburn tunnel (41,42), permits the retention and reflection of the heat generated by the burning to assure complete combustion of all hydrocarbons within the reburn unit. Additionally, the air utilized in the reburn unit may enter through the excitor for efficient distribution and concomitant combustion.

Control means is provided for selectively permitting cooling fluid to flow through said primary passageways and then through said further passageway.

At least one burner is coupled to the reburn unit for burning fuel in the reburn unit and a fan (129) provides oxygen containing gas for combustion of fumes within the reburn unit. An excitor (134) is placed within and is surrounded by the reburn unit. Over the majority of the length of the excitor it is out of contact with the walls of the reburn unit. A plurality of nozzles (135) are provided in the excitor and are connected to a longitudinally extending pipe within the excitor. The pipe is connected by way of a passageway extending through the excitor support (133) to receive combustion air from the fan (129).
