    • A surface mounted grid system for use in association with a substructure (18) and for supporting an array of tile panels (12) which comprises: (a) a plurality of main runners (14) and cross-runners (16) adaptable arranged normal to each other. The main runner (14) has (i) a horizontally oriented surface (24) and spaced, non-peripheral, longitudinal side walls (50,32) depending transversely therefrom and includes a plurality of spaced openings (56); and (ii) a downwardly depending member terminating with a horizontally disposed flange (26) having a longitudinal marginal edge. The cross-runners (16) have (i) a horizontally disposed flange (26) with a transverse marginal edge (61) and arranged in a common plane with the flange of the main runner, and (ii) an intermediate longitudinal web (62) extending transversely from the flange (26) and having a longitudinal projection (64) extending beyond the transverse marginal edge (61). The projection (64) is adaptable for insertion into the opening (56) upon the perpendicular arrangement to provide for mating engagement of the longitudinal marginal edge of the main runner (14) with the transverse marginal edge (61) of the cross-runner (16), thereby supporting the cross-runner (16) and preventing undesired disengagement therebetween, and the flange (26) of the main runner (14) and the flange (26) of the cross-runner (16) being disposed to support tile panels (12) in a common plane.
