    • The invention provides an apparatus for collecting ablated material generated by exposure of an imaging layer to a source of radiation, said apparatus comprising a vacuum supply means, and a vacuum head (3) connected to, and in close proximity with, a centrifugal separator (5), said vacuum head (3) being for direct attachment to a movable mounting means having guide means. The centrifugal separator (5) preferably comprises a reverse flow gas cyclone or a uniflow gas cyclone. The apparatus preferably also includes a filtration system (8) capable of removing any remaining contaminants. Typically, the vacuum supply means comprises a vacuum pump (10), the movable mounting means comprises a carriage to which the vacuum head (3) may be attached and the guide means comprises a guide rail (23). A method of preparing an imaged member is also disclosed, preferably from an imaging member which comprises a lithographic printing plate precursor comprising a substrate and a metal imaging layer.

    • A lithographic printing plate precursor comprises an electrochemically grained aluminium substrate, the grained surface of which is coated with a layer of gel-like amorphous colloidal oxides and hydroxides of aluminium and their hydrates incorporating metallic aluminium and inter-metallic aluminium alloys - generally at a level of below 5% - this layer being produced during the electrochemical graining process. The layer is typically present in an amount of from 0.1-20 g/m 2 and at a layer thickness of 0.1-4.0 µm, the particle sizes in the said layer generally falling in the range of from 10 to 2000 nm. Methods are disclosed for the preparation of said precursors via the electrochemical graining of aluminium substrates. The invention provides lithographic printing plate precursors which may be imagewise exposed by means of a high intensity laser beam to provide printing plates showing high durability on press and giving images which show good resolution and are free from background staining.

    • A lithographic printing plate precursor comprises a grained and anodised aluminium substrate coated with a metallic layer, preferably a silver layer, on top of which is applied a layer comprising at least one sensitising material which adsorbs on to the metallic surface and thereby sensitises the system to heat mode laser exposure. Preferably, the sensitising material comprises a material which includes at least one sulphur, selenium or tellurium containing group and the sensitising layer additionally comprises a hydrophilic material. The invention provides lithographic printing plate precursors having high sensitivity which may be imagewise exposed by means of a high intensity laser beam to provide press ready plates showing high image quality, good press properties and high durability on press without the requirement for the use of intermediate film and developer chemistry.
