    • An educational recommender system and a method are provided. The method includes receiving a request to recommend a course of action related to a plurality of current students; accessing a computer database storing student data that corresponds to the plurality of current students; clustering in a computer process the plurality of current students into at least two clusters based at least on granular assessment data associated with student data corresponding to respective current students; and outputting the results of the clustering to a user. The granular assessment data includes a result of an assessment administered to respective students of the plurality of current students, and each assessment includes a plurality of questions for assessing one of the current students. The associated result includes an independent evaluation of each respective question of the plurality of questions.

    • One embodiment of the present invention provides a system for multi-domain clustering. During operation, the system collects domain data for at least two domains associated with users, wherein a domain is a source of data describing observable activities of a user. Next, the system estimates a probability distribution for a domain associated with the user. The system also estimates a probability distribution for a second domain associated with the user. Then, the system analyzes the domain data with a multi-domain probability model that includes variables for two or more domains to determine a probability distribution of each domain associated with the probability model and to assign users to clusters associated with user roles.

    • A method for determining a target path for a model-based control system. The model-based control system includes a directed acyclic graph, where the directed acyclic graph includes a plurality of vertices interconnected by a plurality of edges. The method includes the steps of performing a depth-first search of the directed acyclic graph for the target path. The depth-first search is operative to return an explicit solution or an implicit solution, wherein the implicit solution is determined using a heuristic. The method further includes determining if the depth-first search returned an explicit solution or an implicit solution, and if the depth-first search returned an implicit solution, constructing the target path from the implicit solution. The method may further include constructing a pattern database.
