    • Cuprous stannate (Cu2SnO3.xH2O) is disclosed, wherein x is 0-3. The cuprous stannate may be incorporated into a composition comprising a polymer, which may be an organic polymer, such as polyvinyl chloride, polyethylene, polypropylene, polystyrene, or an epoxy resin. The polymer composition may contain 0.01-30 wt.% cuprous stannate or if provided as a masterbatch, the composition may comprise 30-70 wt.% cuprous stannate. A method of synthesising cuprous stannate is also claimed, which includes the step of mixing a sodium stannate solution with hydrocuprochloric acid. Typically, the method comprises the additional precursor steps of treating copper (II) oxide with concentrated hydrochloric acid to form copper (II) chloride in solution, which is then mixed with copper metal to produce hydrocuprochloric acid. Use of the cuprous stannate as a smoke suppressant, flame retardant, or thermal stabiliser is also disclosed.
