      1. a movable housing having at least one flat face containing a window through which light from a document to be copied can pass.
      2. a scanner within the housing adapted to scan an image of the document to generate an electrical video signal corresponding to the information carried by the document, '

      4. a pivoting joint between the housing and a support therefor to permit rotation of the housing into at least one other position in which the window is unobstructed and light from a remote document can be directed therethrough to from the image to be scanned.

    • A document scanner is described in which an image of an illuminated information bearing document is formed by a lens and brought to focus in a plane containing a narrow line of photoelectric elements onto which the image falls, which elements are addressed in sequence to produce an electrical signal a parameter of which (such as amplitude) varies in sympathy with the incident light level on the individual elements as the latter are scanned, and means is provided for moving the line of photoelectric elements relative to the image, so that the latter can be scanned in a series of parallel bands, each of which is effectively "scanned" in a direction perpendicular to the movements of the elements by the sequential addressing of the elements making up the line, and the scanner further comprises a first housing within which the lens and line of photoelectric elements are housed and a second housing within which the first housing is mounted for sliding movement parallel to a window remote from the lens through which light from the document can pass, to form the image thereof in the plane containing the line of photoconductive elements.

    • A threshold detector, more especially when embodied in a document scanning device, wherein a varying amplitude video signal is compared with a threshold signal. In accordance with the invention, the threshold signal is produced by a circuit which comprises a counter (22) synchronized to the scanning to produce a sequence of digital values of each line of scan, a memory device (20) which stores digital values released by the digital values produced during scanning, and a D/A converter (26) which produces the required threshold voltage from the digital values released from the memory (Fig 1).

    • A threshold detector, more especially when embodied in a document scanning device, wherein a varying amplitude video signal is compared with a threshold signal.     • A device as described for indicating the state of focus of an image of a document which is converted into a video signal by sequentially inspecting the incident light level at points within the image and generating an electrical signal having a parameter which varies with the light level. The device includes:-

      (a) circuit means responsive to the electrical signal from sequential inspection of the image for integrating the amplitude variations thereof to produce a varying amplitude focus indication signal,
      (b) amplifying means for generating from the varying amplitude signal a varying control signal,
      (c) an indicator comprising a linear array of lamps,
      (d) circuit means which provides operating current for the lamps the current being related to the amplitude of the focus indication signal, so that with increasing amplitude of the latter so more of the lamps are caused to be illuminated or vice versa, where all the lamps are illuminated to indicate a state of poor focus, and
      (e) means for adjusting the focus of the image in response to visual inspection of the illuminated lamps, so as to obtain the best possible indication of the state of focus of the image.

    • A document scanner is described in which a book can be offered up to a wedge-shaped housing containing at least one window through which one page of the book can be viewed.
      The book is carried by a trough shaped support which is movable up and down as required and may be fully floating to allow different thicknesses etc. of book to be accommodated.
      The book support is itself rotatable about a vertical axis to an opposite page of a book to be presented to the window.
      A lamp is incorporated in the housing off-axis to illuminate the page to be scanned theough the viewing corridor.
      The scanning element is typically an elongate array of photosensitive junctions and scanning is achieved by electrically addressing each of the junctions in succession.
