摘要： A covert mark (1) which may be applied to an article (2) comprises a fluorescent or phosphorescent material and has a unidirectionally aligned structure. Upon illumination of the mark (1) with ultraviolet radiation (3a), the mark (1) emits polarised fluorescent or phosphorescent radiation (3a) of characteristic radiation. The mark (1) may therefore be used in a system for covertly marking and checking the authenticity of a genuine article (2) whereby polarised fluorescent or phosphorescent radiation (3b) emitted from the mark (1) is incident on linearly polarising material. Detecting polarised fluorescent or phosphorescent radiation (3b) of characteristic wavelength and polarisation provides an indication of the authenticity of the article (2). By varying the orientation of the linearly polarising material, the plane of polarisation of radiation transmitted by the material is varied and a characteristic flashing effect is observed. The observation of fluorescent or phophorescent radiation (3b) of characteristic wavelength in addition to the characteristic flashing effect provides an indication of the authenticity of the article (2). In an alternative arrangement, the system may comprise a liquid crystal cell, containing a twisted nematic material, to which a variable voltage is applied. The voltage applied across the liquid crystal cell may be varied to produce the required characteristic flashing effect.

摘要： A liquid crystal device comprises a layer of nematic or long pitch cholesteric liquid crystal material contained between two cell walls. One wall (A) carries a surface treatment giving a first azimuthal alignment direction with or without a surface pretilt to liquid crystal molecules. The other wall (B) carries a surface treatment (17) capable of separately providing both a preferred, substantially homeotropic alignment of the adjacent liquid crystal, and a defined azimuthal second alignment direction to the adjacent liquid crystal dependent upon liquid crystal molecular arrangement. The first and second alignment directions are approximately orthogonal. The device is formed into an array of separately addressable pixels, e.g. an x, y matrix array. Each pixel may be addressed via an active matrix e.g. thin film transistors, or in an rms. multiplex manner via row and column electrodes. Polarisers may be arranged on either side of the cell walls with their polarisation axes parallel or perpendicular to the two azimuthal directions. Alternatively an amount of dichroic dye may be incorporated in the liquid crystal material, and the device operated with one or two polarisers. The device operates between two different voltage levels, one level providing a non twisted liquid crystal molecular arrangement, the other and higher voltage providing a twisted molecular arrangement. The two polarisers, or dye plus polarisers, distinguishes between the two molecular arrangements in a manner similar to that of prior art twisted nematic devices.

摘要： A damage sensor for detecting damage within a structure such as aircraft wings or fuselage, or a bridge. The sensor comprises a small piece of a triboluminescent material connected via light guiding fibres or layers to one or more detectors. The sensor may be embedded within the structure or mounted on its surface. Impact of objects on the structure causes a physical damage to the triboluminescent material. Such damage causes light emission which is detected and recorded for later observation. The intensity of emission may be measured to give an indication of amount of damage received by the structure. Several different triboluminescent materials may be arranged in different locations within the structure so that location of damage may be detected by a single detector sensitive to the different wavelengths of light emitted by the several materials. Light from the triboluminescent material may be detected directly by the detectors. Alternatively, material doped with suitable photo excitable dyes may be caused to photo excite, and the resultant light output detected.

摘要： Liquid crystal devices are formed by a layer of a liquid crystal material enclosed between two cell walls, both carrying electrode structures, and one or both walls treated to align molecules of the liquid crystal material. Most alignment treatment give alignment and surface pretilt with a strong azimuthal and zenithal anchoring energy to contacting liquid crystal molecules. The invention reduces at least one of the azimuthal zenithal or translational anchoring energy to improve switching characteristics and optical performance by allowing movement of liquid crystal molecules at or close to the cell wall. The reduction of anchoring energy may be achieved by an oligomer or short chain polymer which is either spread on the surface or added to the liquid crystal material. The size of oligomer or short chain polymer is low enough that it does not appreciably phase separate from the liquid crystal material. The polymer layer has the characteristics of having imperfect solubility in the liquid crystal material used in the device, of having a physical affinity for the surface of the substrate, and of retaining a substantially liquid like surface at the polymer/liquid crystal interface. The polymer may be formed by polymerisation of reactive low molecular weight materials in solution in the liquid crystal fluid. The resulting solution or dispersion of polymer in liquid crystal is then filled into the cell, and the polymer is allowed to coat the substrate surfaces.
