    • One embodiment of the present invention provides a system for graph pruning. During operation, the system identifies a connected component in a graph comprising one or more vertices. A respective vertex of the graph represent an element in a data set, an edge between two vertices represents a type and strength of relationship between the vertices. The system identifies a connected component to be smaller than a minimum graph traversal threshold associated with a query for the graph. This minimum graph traversal threshold indicates a minimum number of traversal steps needed for the query. The system then generates a second graph by pruning the connected component from the graph. This second graph is processed to extract information of interest from the data set.

    • One embodiment of the present invention provides a system for generating a product recommendation. During operation, the system receives graph data indicating vertices and edges of the graph. The vertices represent customers and products and the edges represent purchases. The system then receives a query of the graph to determine a product recommendation. Next, the system generates a finite-state machine (FSM) based on the query, executes the query, and determines whether a current state of the FSM is a traversal state. In response to the current state being a traversal state, the system generates a traversal FSM. The system then searches the traversal FSM for a nearest future traversal state, generates a bitmask for the future traversal state, and utilizes the generated bitmask when executing the future traversal state to generate the product recommendation.

    • An educational recommender system and a method are provided. The method includes receiving a request to recommend a course of action related to a plurality of current students; accessing a computer database storing student data that corresponds to the plurality of current students; clustering in a computer process the plurality of current students into at least two clusters based at least on granular assessment data associated with student data corresponding to respective current students; and outputting the results of the clustering to a user. The granular assessment data includes a result of an assessment administered to respective students of the plurality of current students, and each assessment includes a plurality of questions for assessing one of the current students. The associated result includes an independent evaluation of each respective question of the plurality of questions.
