    • In a vehicle braking system, a backup piston (88) pushes a master piston (26) directly from behind when hydraulic pressure of a boosted hydraulic pressure chamber decreases. The backup piston (88) has a piston body (88a) which is slidably fitted in a casing (17), and a pusher (88b) which is slidably fitted in the casing (17) with a seal diameter smaller than seal diameters of the master piston (26) and the piston body (88a) and which extends to the front end of the piston body (88a), to push the master piston (26) from behind. An annular input chamber (96) communicated with a hydraulic power source (12) is formed between the backup piston (88) and the casing (17). When the pusher (88b) pushes the master piston (26) forward, amount of volume increased in the boosted hydraulic pressure chamber (25) is set to be substantially equal to amount of volume decreased in the input chamber. Thus, it is possible to avoid increase in the hydraulic pressure of the boosted hydraulic pressure chamber (25) during forward movement of the backup piston (88), using a simple configuration with a reduced number of parts.

    • A vehicle braking system includes: a hydraulic booster (13) which applies output hydraulic pressure of a hydraulic power source (12) to a boosted hydraulic pressure chamber (25) after regulating the output hydraulic pressure as a control piston (90) operates to balance reaction force generated by hydraulic pressure of the boosted hydraulic pressure chamber (25) with brake operating input, the boosted hydraulic pressure chamber (25) facing the rear face of a master piston (26) of a master cylinder (15); and a brake stroke simulator (14) installed between a brake operating member (11,179) and the control piston (90). The hydraulic booster (13) includes a backup piston (88) which is slidably housed in a casing (17) with its front face turned to the boosted hydraulic pressure chamber (25) and which can directly push the master piston (26) in response to operation of the brake operating member (11,179) when the hydraulic pressure of the boosted hydraulic pressure chamber (25) decreases. The control piston (90) and the brake stroke simulator (14) are contained in the backup piston (88). Thus, it is possible to improve the efficiency in assembling the hydraulic booster (13) and brake stroke simulator (14) to the casing (17) of the master cylinder (15).

    • A simulator piston (177) is slidably fitted in a control piston (90) to form a stroke liquid chamber (182) between itself and an end wall of a control piston (90). A port (183) which is closed at a forward limit of the control piston (90) with respect to a backup piston (88) is provided in the end wall of the control piston (90). A first reaction piston (126) which constantly abuts against the end wall of the control piston (90) and a second reaction piston (127) which abuts against the end wall of the control piston (90) when the control piston (90) advances toward the backup piston (88) through a predetermined travel distance or more, are relatively slidably mounted on the backup piston (88) so that hydraulic pressure of the boosted hydraulic pressure chamber (25) acts on their front ends. Thus, it is possible to curb increase in a stroke and reaction of a brake operating member (11,179) which would be invalidated by a brake stroke simulator (14) when a hydraulic power source (12) fails, and avoid insufficient strokes of the brake operating member (11,179) even if spikes are inputted.
