    • Provided is a card reader that accepts and processes the short side of a substantially rectangular IC card conforming to international and JIS standards, said card reader being capable of easily determining whether or not the orientation of the inserted IC card is correct. This card reader comprises: an insertion port (3) wherein a card (2) having a built-in IC chip is inserted; a metal detection mechanism (10) for detecting an external connection terminal (2C) of the IC chip formed in the card (2); and a tip detection mechanism (11) for detecting the tip, in the insertion direction, of the card (2) inserted from the insertion port (3). In this card reader (1), the metal detection mechanism (10) and the tip detection mechanism (11) detects the tip, in the insertion direction, of the card (2) inserted in the correct orientation from the insertion port (3), the metal detection mechanism (10) is arranged at a position that detects the external connection terminal (2c).

    • The present invention provides a card processing system capable of causing the light-emitting unit of a card reader to shine using various luminous colors and light-emission methods corresponding to customer needs, even when the firmware stored in the control unit of the card reader is shared. A card processing system (10) is provided with a card reader (1) and a host control section (11) for controlling the card processing system (10), the card reader (1) being provided with a card insertion part having a light-emitting part (15) capable of emitting light in a plurality of colors and a control section (3). The control section (3), connected to the host control section (11), performs light-emission control for controlling the luminous color and light-emission method of the light-emitting unit (15). A host-side light-emission program is stored in the host control section (11), the host-side light emission program defining a combination of luminous colors and light-emission methods of the light-emitting part (15) and performing light-emission control, and the host control section (11) presets a light-emission program in the control section (3) on the basis of the host-side light-emission program. The control section (3) performs light-emission control on the basis of the preset light-emission program.
