    • Provided is a point-to-multipoint optical communication system capable of extending a transmission distance between a subscriber apparatus and a station apparatus without changing wavelengths of an upstream optical signal and a downstream optical signal, which are used in both of the apparatuses. The point-to-multipoint optical communication system includes, as a basic configuration thereof, an optical network for connecting one station apparatus (1) to a plurality of (n) subscriber apparatuses (4). Among m basic configurations, one station-side wavelength multiplexer/demultiplexer (22), one optical fiber transmission line (30), and one subscriber-side wavelength multiplexer/demultiplexer (12) are shared. The point-to-multipoint optical communication system further includes a station-side repeating unit (20) and a subscriber-side repeating unit (10) each including the one wavelength multiplexer/demultiplexer (22 or 12) and m wavelength converters (21 or 11). An optical signal having a conventionally-used wavelength is used between the station apparatus (1) and the station-side repeating unit (20) and between the subscriber apparatus (4) and the subscriber-side repeating unit (10), and an extensible optical signal, on which wavelength division multiplexing has been performed, is used between the wavelength multiplexers/demultiplexers (12 and 22) via the optical fiber transmission line (30).

    • Provided is an optical receiver, which has wide dynamic range characteristics to reproduce burst signals of different light receiving levels stably and which is excellent in a high-speed responsiveness and in an identical code continuation resistance. The optical receiver comprises a preamplifier for converting an output from a light receiving element into a voltage signal, a level detecting circuit having a first level detecting unit of a short time constant and a second level detecting unit of a long time constant and switched to either of the level detecting units on the basis of a time constant switching signal thereby to detect the voltage level of the voltage signal outputted from the preamplifier, an amplifier for controlling the conversion gain of the preamplifier variably on the basis of the detection result, and time constant switching control means for outputting a time constant switching signal on the basis of the output voltage signal from the preamplifier. The time constant switching control circuit outputs the time constant switching signal to the level detecting means so that the first level detecting unit may be selected in case the identical code continuation number of the bit series of a packet of the burst signals received is smaller than a predetermined number, and so that the second level detecting unit may be selected in case the same is larger than a predetermined number.

    • Provided is an optical receiver, which has a wide-dynamic range characteristic to stably reproduce a burst signal having different light receiving levels and which is excellent in high-speed response with long consecutive identical digit signals. The optical receiver includes: a preamplifier for converting an output from a light receiving element into a voltage signal; a level detecting circuit including: a first level detecting unit having a short time constant; and a second level detecting unit having a long time constant and switching over to any one of the level detecting units in response to a time constant switching signal to detect a voltage level of an output voltage signal output from the preamplifier; an amplifier for variably controlling a conversion gain of the preamplifier based on a result by the detecting; and time constant switching control means for outputting the time constant switching signal based on the output voltage signal from the preamplifier. The time constant switching control means outputs the time constant switching signal to the level detecting means so as to select, when a number of consecutive identical digits of a bit string of a packet of a received burst signal is smaller than a predetermined number, the first level detecting unit, and so as to select, when the number of consecutive identical digits is equal to or larger than the predetermined number, the second detecting unit.
