    • An image display having electrodes for controlling beams, disposed between a group of cathode wires (2) and a screen (8) with a phosphor layer, comprises a beam start offset signal generating circuit (31) for generating a signal for oscillating a predetermined beam horizontally, a PIN photodiode (33) for measuring the quantity of light emitted from the phosphor layer because of the beam, a comparator (35) for generating a beam landing position error signal from the measured quantity of light, an integrating circuit (36) for generating a beam position control signal according to the beam landing position error signal, and a horizontal deflecting electrode driving circuit (39) for driving a horizontal deflecting electrode (6) according to signals such as the beam position control signal. There is little difference between the phosphor stripe on the screen and the position of the beam spot, and deterioration of the quality of image including the color misregistration hardly occurs.
