    • A fuel pumping apparatus of the rotary distributor type includes a fluid pressure actuable spill valve member (43) operable to terminate delivery of fuel through an outlet (18) from a bore (14) containing the pumping plungers (15). The valve member is moved to the open position by an actuating piston (44). One end of the cylinder (40) containing the actuating piston is connected to a low pressure source (35) of fuel by way of a non-return valve (37) and the same end of the cylinder can be connected by a control valve (26) to a high pressure source of fuel when spillage of fuel is required. Associated with the piston (44) is a balance piston (46) and the two pistons define a flow path for fuel from the one end of the cylinder (40) to the bore (14) to ensure that the bore is completely full of fuel prior to the next delivery of fuel through an outlet.

    • A fuel pumping apparatus of the rotary distributor type has a fluid pressure operable valve (43) which can be opened to terminate delivery of fuel to an associated engine. The operation of the valve is controlled by an axially movable shuttle (34) contained in a cylinder. The shuttle is biased toward one end of the cylinder and is displaced away from the one end of the cylinder by fuel supplied by an auxiliary plunger (30). The shuttle is angularly movable by an actuating mechanism (42A) to vary the extent of movement before operation of the valve (43). The shuttle (34) is biased to the one end of the cylinder by a shuttle return piston (50) in order to reduce the frictional loads on the actuating mechanism (42A). The cylinder containing the return piston is connected to an accumulator chamber (52).

    • A fuel injection pumping apparatus for supplying fuel to a compression ignition engine has an annular cam ring which has internal cam lobes for imparting inward movement through cam followers respectively to pumping plungers mounted in a rotary distributor member. Stop rings are mounted alongside the cam ring to determine the maximum outward movement of the plungers. The stop rings are angularly adjustable to enable the maximum amount of fuel supplied to the engine to be varied. Two adjusting devices are provided the first being a piston (37) which is subject to a fluid pressure varying with speed. The piston is biased by a spring and sets the stop rings to allow an excess of fuel for engine starting purposes and the second is a diaphragm assembly responsive to the air pressure in the engine inlet manifold. In order to save space the piston is slidable within a housing (34) which also accommodates the diaphragm assembly and the diaphragm assembly is coupled to the stop rings by means of a push rod (54) which passes through an aperture in the piston.

    • The present invention relates to a radial piston pump, and more particularly to a radial piston pump suitable for delivering liquid at a high pressure and at a volumetric output rate which can be controlled independently of the speed of rotation of the pump drive shaft. A radial piston pump(1) is provided which comprises a multiplicity of radially extending cylinders(14) each of which is provided with a radially moveable pumping plunger(15) to define, within the cylinder, a pumping chamber(16) which may be increased in volume by a movement of its associated plunger(15) in one direction to receive a liquid to be pumped and may be reduced in volume by movement of its associated plunger(15) in the opposite direction to deliver a liquid at high pressure to an output line. The pump(1) also comprises means for selectively disabling one or more of the pumping chambers(16) so that the or each disabled pumping chamber delivers no pumped fluid to the output line. The arrangement of the present invention has the advantage over the prior art of providing a reduction in the variation of drive torque.
