    • A system and method for laser beam welding at least two adjacent superalloy components (102,104) involves substantially simultaneous formation of a base weld (110) with a first filler metal (106) placed between the components (102,104) and cap weld (112) with second filler metal (504) formed over the base weld. A shim (106) is inserted between the components (102,104), which may optionally be formed with a groove (105) along the joint surface (114). A filler wire (504) is fed to a location over the given surface (114) or within the optional groove (105). Two lasers or a laser and coupled beam splitter supply first and second laser beams (508,510) that are applied at focal points (512,514) separated by a predetermined distance (509), e.g., 0.05-1.5 cm. The first laser beam (508) is used to form a base weld (110) with the first filler metal (106) between the components (102,104), and the second laser beam (510) is used to form a cap weld (112) with the second filler metal (504) on top of the base weld (110).

    • Disclosed herein are methods for coating metal substrates (12), systems therefore, and articles made therefrom. In one embodiment, the method of coating a metal substrate (12) comprises: disposing a metallic bond coating (14) on the metal substrate (12), creating ions with a reverse polarity high frequency apparatus at a frequency of greater than or equal to about 2.5 kHz, roughening the surface (18) with the ions to a subsequent average surface roughness of greater than or equal to about 5 µm, and disposing a ceramic coating (16) on the metallic bond coating surface (18). The metallic bond coating (14) had a surface (18) with an initial average surface roughness of less than or equal to about 1 µm.
