    • A coordinate measuring system including a multi jointed arm. The multijointed arm includes a plurality of transfer housings for producing signals corresponding to the position of the tip of the arm. A serial box mounted to the arm receive signals from the transfer housings and processes the signals for use by a computer. The serial box emits an audible tone when any one of the transfer housings is rotated beyond a predetermined limit. An earphone jack is provided at the serial box for providing the audible tone to earphones. A speaker may also be mounted in one or more of the transfer housings. One or more of the transfer housings may be placed in a locked state preventing rotation of the transfer housing and eliminating a degree of freedom of the arm.

    • A coordinate measuring system having a quick disconnect is disclosed. The coordinate measuring system includes a multijointed arm having a first end and a plurality of transfer housings for generating signals indicating the position of the first end. A first locking device is mountable to a second end of the arm. The first locking device has a first surface which is removably received within a first opening in a housing. The housing is mountable to a support and includes a second opening for communicating with the first opening. A second locking device having a second surface is movably received within the second opening from an unlocked position to a locked position and constitutes a cam which rotates to engage the first locking device. The second surface engages the first surface in the locked position to prevent the first locking member from being removed from the first opening. The first and second surfaces are not engaged in the unlocked position so that the first locking member can be removed from the first opening. Multiple sets of first and second locking devices are disclosed.

    • A method and apparatus for transfer and setup of a mechanically correct positional relationship for a jig or transfer setup tool (30), using a portable coordinate measuring machine (10) is presented. The coordinate measuring machine (10) comprises a multijointed manually positionable measuring arm (12) for accurately and easily measuring a plurality of setup points or markers (82-88) on the jig or transfer setup tool (30). Once a properly configured transfer has been modified to include markers, a master or reference file of the markers is established. The base marker positions (60-64) are sequentially digitized. These digitized base markers are stored in computer memory and used to establish a master coordinate system. Once digitization of all the markers on the base is completed the positions of the markers (82-88) on the transfer are measured. The positions of the transfer markers relative to the base markers are used to provide a master or reference file for the transfer. In the event that a transfer losses positioning during a production run, the transfer simply needs to be removed and mounted to the reference base (34). The appropriate reference file is selected and the user then systematically checks each marker position on the base (34) and transfer (30). The screen graphically demonstrates alignment for the transfer markers. Transfer markers which are out of alignment are readjusted or repaired and then confirmed using the above method. Once repaired or adjusted, the transfer may be returned to the production line.

    • An optical camera three-dimensional coordinate measuring system for use with objects to be measured is described. The system includes a compact, easily moveable and rotatable target of known dimensions comprising a spherical surface to be placed in contact with the object to be measured at different points along the object to be measured. A light emitting source is located in a known position in the target such as the center of the spherical surface. At least two cameras located at different and known coordinate locations for receiving light from the light emitting source from different optical perspectives are included. The position in three dimensional coordinates of the object to be measured is computed from the images taken by the cameras.
