    • A variable displacement axial piston pump (11) including a housing (19 and a back plate (25), with a cylinder barrel (29) rotating therein, and defining a plurality of cylinders (31), and a piston (33) reciprocably disposed in each one. There is a tiltable swashplate (37) whereby the displacement of the pump can be varied. In one embodiment, an open center shuttle assembly (71) is disposed in the swashplate (37), and interconnects the high and low pressure paths of the pump to provide a wide neutral band. When the pump is displaced intentionally, the resulting pressure in the high pressure path biases the shuttle to a closed position, permitting normal operation of the pump. In a second embodiment, the shuttle assembly (71) is disposed in the back plate (25), and is accompanied by a load holding valve assembly (105), which insures that, when the vehicle is on an incline, the fluid pumped by the propel motors won't flow through the shuttle assembly (71).

    • A gear pump (11) is disclosed of the type comprising a housing (15,17) defining gear cavities (25) in which are rotatably disposed first (27) and second (29) gears. Each of the gears includes a gear portion and a generally cylindrical portion (37,39) on one axial side of the gear. The housing defines first (41) and second (43) cylindrical, internal pilot surfaces receiving and rotatably supporting the cylindrical portions of the gears. The engagement of each cylindrical portion and its respective internal pilot surface comprises substantially the only bearing support for the gear. One gear (27) comprises a drive gear and is driven by an input shaft (23) defining a bearing portion (51) received within a cylindrical pilot surface (55) defined by the housing. With the present invention, the primary pilot surfaces which need to be concentric are all defined by the same housing member, to facilitate accurate machining thereof. The input shaft (23) is a separate piece from the drive gear (27) and its size is not limited by the size of the gears, and may be readily replaced "in the field" without substantial disassembly of the pump.

    • A gerotor motor is disclosed of the type including a stationary, internally-toothed ring member (21;221) and an externally-toothed star member (23;223) orbiting and rotating within the ring member. The motor is of the type utilizing a valving member (53;253) of the "low-speed" type, which rotates at the speed of rotation of the star member. The star member defines internal splines (43;243) and in engagement therewith is an insert member (79;279) which is, in turn, in splined engagement with a valve drive shaft (47;247). The insert member (79;279) extends axially beyond the star member and is received within an adjacent annular recess (85;285), thus maximizing the spline length available for engagement with the main drive shaft (39;239), and maximizing the torque capacity of the motor.

    • A torque generator steering device (11) including a gerotor gear set (17) disposed adjacent an end cap (15) and having the input shaft (21) extending through the end cap and through the orbiting and rotating star member (31). The valving of the device, including a spool valve (37) and a sleeve valve (39), is disposed on the side of the gerotor gear set (17) toward an output shaft (23). Preferably, the input shaft (21) is integral with the spool valve (37), and the sleeve valve (39) is integral with the output shaft (23). A coupling arrangement (77) is provided to translate orbital and rotational movement of the star (31) into rotational follow-up movement of the sleeve valve (39). The result is a very short, compact torque generator having substantially reduced backlash between the input shaft (21) and the output shaft (23).

    • A rotary fluid pressure device is disclosed of the type including a gerotor displacement mechanism (17). The gerotor includes a ring member (21) and a star member (23) eccentrically disposed within the ring member, and having relative orbital and rotational movement therein. The device includes a spool valve member (51) disposed immediately adjacent the gerotor and adapted to be rotated at the speed of rotation of the star member. The device further includes an output shaft (29). Orbital and rotational movement of the star member is transmitted to the output shaft by means of an elongated, hollow, universal shaft (69). A valve drive shaft (79) is located at least partially within, and extending axially through the hollow universal shaft. In one embodiment of the invention, the valve drive shaft includes a valve end (85) in engagement with the spool valve, and a shaft end (81) in engagement with the output shaft, to transmit rotation of the output shaft into rotation of the spool valve (51).
