    • A center bearing assembly rotatably supports an intermediate portion of a vehicle driveshaft assembly during use. The center bearing assembly includes a rigid bracket (41) that is secured to a support surface of the vehicle, a support member (42) that is supported within the rigid bracket, and an annular bearing (20) that is supported within the support member for rotatably supporting the intermediate portion (17) of the vehicle driveshaft assembly. The support member (42) is formed from a resilient material and has a cavity formed therein. A sponge (44) is disposed within the cavity formed in the support member. The sponge may be formed from any material that is capable of absorbing or otherwise retaining a quantity of a rheological fluid therein. A control circuit (51) is provided for selectively generating and applying an energy field to the rheological fluid contained within the sponge and thereby varying the resistance to flow or shear thereof. As a result, the vibration dampening characteristics of the support member can be varied.

    • An end fitting 20 formed from a metallic material is connected to a hollow cylindrical drive shaft tube 11 formed from a composite material is disclosed. The drive shaft tube 11 has an open end and an inner cylindrical surface 12. The end fitting 20 includes a cylindrical sleeve portion 24 having an outer circumferential surface which is formed having a plurality of longitudinally extending channels 27. An adhesive material, such as epoxy, is applied either to the outer circumferential surface of the sleeve portion 24 or to the inner cylindrical surface 12 of the bore of the drive shaft tube 11. Then, the sleeve portion 24 of the end fitting 20 is inserted within the drive shaft tube 11, with the outer surface of the sleeve portion 24 engaging the inner cylindrical surface 12 of the drive shaft tube 11 in a light press relationship. The adhesive material flows into the channels 27 between the sleeve portion 24 of the end fitting 20 and the inner cylindrical surface 12 of the drive shaft 11. The adhesive material is cured to form an adhesive bond between the channels 27 in the sleeve and the inner cylindrical surface 12 of the bore of the drive shaft tube 11.

    • A center bearing assembly rotatably supports an intermediate portion of a vehicle driveshaft assembly during use. The center bearing assembly includes a rigid bracket that is secured to a support surface of the vehicle, a support member that is supported within the rigid bracket, and an annular bearing that is supported within the support member for rotatably supporting the intermediate portion of the vehicle driveshaft assembly. Each of the bladders is filled with a quantity of a rheological fluid. Fluid communication between adjacent pairs of the bladders is provided by respective control valves. A control circuit is provided for selectively generating and applying an energy field to each of the control valves so as to vary the ability of the rheological fluid to flow therethrough between the associated pair of bladders. As a result, the vibration dampening characteristics of the support member can be varied.

    • A slip joint includes a structure that prevents a negative pressure situation from occurring within a sealed lubricant chamber during operation thereof. The slip joint includes a male splined member (18) having a plurality of external splines (20) formed thereon that cooperate with a plurality of internal splines (44) formed on a female splined member. The cooperating splines are disposed within a lubricant chamber (74) defined at one end by a seal assembly (60) and at the other end by a pressure regulator assembly (80) that maintains a positive pressure situation within the lubricant chamber during operation thereof (i.e., a situation where the fluid pressure within the lubricant chamber is greater than or equal to than the fluid pressure outside of the lubricant chamber). To accomplish this, the pressure regulator assembly includes a housing having an open end that faces toward the lubricant chamber. A spring (90) urges the pressure compensator assembly toward the lubricant chamber. As a result, the pressure compensator assembly compresses the lubricant disposed within the sealed lubricant chamber and, accordingly, functions to maintain a positive pressure situation within the lubricant chamber. This positive pressure situation deters contaminants from passing through the seal assembly into the region of the cooperating splines.
