The upper face (2) is formed as a rake face (7) so as to adjoin the cutting edge (5) in the region of the cutting corner (5a) and the adjoining cutting edge portions (5b), said rake face sloping downward in the direction of the lower face (3) with increasing distance from the cutting edge (5). The rake face (7) has a protruding convex bead (9) which extends at a distance from the cutting edge (5) at least in the region of the cutting corner (5a). The rake face (7) extends on a bead (9) face facing away from the cutting edge towards a rake base (8) where the rake face (7) has a shorter distance to the lower face (3) than at the bead (9) face facing the cutting edge (5).

Said cutting insert comprises a main blade for comparatively rough cuts and a simultaneously working finishing blade. According to figure 3, which shows a cutting edge as a section BB of a cutting insert having a symmetrical direction (9), the inventive cutting insert is provided with sectors A and B which are bent differently relative to each other and have a different length, and a knob (70) which is elongate relative to the position and direction of stretching (10). A workpiece having low roughness is obtained even at a relatively great depth of cut and at great tool advance during turning with a cutting insert that is embodied in said manner.
