摘要： A vehicle safety arrangement comprising a seat back support (4a) adapted to be attached to the back of a vehicle seat (50) and a side impact protective air bag module comprising an inflator (1) and a folded inflatable air bag (8). The seat back support (4a) is formed with integrally moulded or extruded flanges forming a housing for the inflator (1) and the air bag (8), and with a gas channel (16) linking the inflator (1) with the air bag (8). The arrangement can be placed outside the seat structure and will not conflict with occupant comfort. Furthermore since it is independent of the seat structure it can be manufactured separately. The arrangement also comprises fewer component parts with attendant cost and weight savings and making it easier to manufacture. The seat back support (4a) is a plastic module which can be snapped or bolted onto the back of a front seat (50) and is generally used to prevent injury to rear passengers such as from submarining. The present invention provides a seat back support (4a) integrated air bag (8) arrangement with either a plastics extruded or a plastics moulded housing design and provides a side impact system that is compact in design and lightweight, easy to assemble and inexpensive.

摘要： A side impact airbag (10) and a method of folding. The airbag (10) comprises a head and a thorax compartment (5, 6) separated by a panel (4) of airbag fabric and pneumatically linked by a vent hole (13) in the panel (4). On inflation the panel is adjacent the shoulder of an average occupant. The airbag (10) may be made of two or three pieces of fabric. If only two pieces are used then the dividing panel (4) is formed from part of one or both of the other two pieces. The inflation profile of the airbag (10) may be controlled by tethers (8) or by mounting it at 10°-40° to the horizontal. Tethers and stitching may also be used. The two compartments (5, 6) may be of different weight and denier; a higher weight fabric for the lower, thorax, compartment (6), and a lower weight fabric for the upper head compartment (5). An airbag folding method is also described.

摘要： An airbag (50) for side impact protection has an inflatable first chamber (50a) formed of two joined-together first (52a) and second (52b) panels of fabric. The first chamber includes a forward part and an opposite rear part (60). An inflator (26) has exit ports (26a) which channel inflation gas into the first chamber in a determinable direction. The airbag also has a flow diverter (70, 90) positioned to receive inflation gas and to divert at least a component of the inflation gas to flow generally perpendicular to the first direction. In one embodiment the flow diverter is an open topped tube. In another embodiment the flow diverter includes a plurality of vent openings in the side of the tube. In a third embodiment of the invention the diverter is a permeable fabric.
